its after, but not for the reasons Red says. When you work out, you cause tiny tears in your muscles. Protein helps to rebuild your muscles, and more muscle is presumably what you are after.

I think you should have one after you workout because I think I remember being taught in highschool that your metabolism is "better" after working out.

wright after working out - it repairs muscle and thats the time body needs it the most.
