Why does the US sanction a religious country?

I also do not understand your question. Many European and South American countries have populations whose religions are predominantly Roman Catholic, or, in other countries Greek or Russian Orthodox Catholic, but their governments are generally democracies, not theocracies, thus, in supporting them or allying with them, the United States is not sanctioning their religious beliefs.

Are you implying that any sort of dimplomacy with "religious" countries is in some way wrong or illegal?

Are you more comfortable allowing America to deal specifically with countries that practice, oh, religious oppression?

My observation is that it is these so called religious countries that sanction the US. Your observation is just a US reaction.
