Look at air pressure rates for diving. Gravity is the force acting on everything to compress it towards the centre of the earth. Air pressure decreases with higher altitutes, increases with lower. Thus worldwide macrofalling at a constent rate of 9.8m/sec is achieved and documented.

I use to think Shoemaker-Levy was a good example, before I read the bible and found out that Jupiter was just an ornament attached to the Firmament.
