I have a Rock Island Armory 1911. It is very basic which is cool. It has plain, smooth wood grips and I am considering making a small upgrade. The whole gun is simply blued, and not every type of grip would look good with that flat black color. If you know of any cool hand grips or a website that you could link I would appreciate it. I am mainly interested in hearing your opinion on what would look good with a simple 1911 like mine. I don't want to only see a bunch of them on an E-bay list, I want some feedback about which ones you specifically like and why.

A cheap price is important too.

Hogue grips are great and the finger grooves give it a very personal feel. Also, they will reduce your felt recoil. I have them on 3 different guns and love them. $20-25.

Ed brown cocobolo, or mayan bloodwood look simply amazing against a blue steel 1911.

Check out Brownells.com for the best quality replacement grips and all the other "cool" 1911 accesories.

Personally I've had good luck on EBay. (If you know exactly what you want)

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of grip options for the 1911 I simply can't give you a simple answer.

Keep shopping around (It may take a long time) but if you want it for a 1911 chances are it exists.

Don't settle and wait for exactly what you want. You have nothing but options when it comes to old 1911s

When doing anything with or to a 1911 remember the old adage, KISS, or, keep it simple, stupid. You can buy fancy dancy eye catching glow in the dark grips or almost anything. I prefer either the simple Pachmyer or Hoague black checkered or rippled grips that are inexpensive, simple to put on the pistol, and they work beautifully. The pachmyer grip wraps around the fron of the grip and won't slip; the hoague is every bit as good. Flip a coin.

I have to agree with Derrick. Hogues are the best I've found. I have seven 1911s with the rubber grips, including a Springfield Long Slide .45ACP.

I picked up a set of "Uncle Mikes" black rubber checkered grips for my Rock Island .45 for like $5 bucks on EBAY.

The rose wood originals looked good but the "Uncle Mikes" work and look great.

I recently added Pachmayr rosewood grips to my 1911. 27$ and the look amazing. They have rubber finger grooves that help control recoil as well.

I have rubber diamond-checkered grips on my Kimber. I like the traditional grip design either in rubber, plastic, or walnut. I have had hogue and pachmayr wraparounds and did not like them.

Ivory, or sambar stag.

If those are too pricey for your budget, several companies make imitation ivory grips.

If you get the ivories, or imitation ivory grips, you ought to have some scrimshaw done on them. I highly recommend the artistry of Twyla Taylor, she is a great artisan.
