We need religion just like the way everyone seem to need education. Choosing a religion is like choosing a college course. That is the matrix of the times. We should not forget, however, Thomas Edison did no formal education. He re engineered the industrial revolution.
People was wondering where Jesus got his authority. He was neither a Pharisee nor a Sadducee. But He became a priest in the order of Melchizedek.

A means of fellowship.
A means of spiritual support.
A focal point, where many of the same faith can join together in prayer and thanksgiving.
A place where like minds can join together and grow in Wisdom.
And a place away from the world that a person can pray singly
and commune with that one we call the creator (God).
It does not have to be a religion per say, but a fellowship group.

religion is a way of life. it is full of rules for life. it tells u what is right and what is wrong. it tells u how to deal with people and yourself. it teaches u everything.
