competitive lap swimming, butterfly stroke. nothing else uses so many muscles so intensely, and it is naturally progressive: the better/stronger you get, and the more endurance you gain, the harder you work out.
If you have nobody to compete against, compete against the clock.
if you do not have a pool available, the next best one is jumping rope with a weighted jump rope.
Be careful though, fast burning activities require a really high level of fitness, and you should keep an eye on your heart rate, to keep it in the safe range, if you are not presently fit...
If you have never been extremely fit, and you have any doubts about the wisdom of taking up intense exercise, like might be caused by shortness of breath, asthma, family history of heart trouble... you may want to see your doctor first for a physical.

I'm working from memory this is not gospel.
I used to be very active at weight lifting and used info from Muscle and Fitness Mag. As I recall in order to get to the "fat" burning stage required time as well as effort. That does not mean strenuous effort. Aerobic (running, biking, get the heart going types) vs Anaerobic(weight lifting) was where the fat gets burned.
This is the real short version so to get real answers find someone that you know for sure has an education in this. DO NOTHING without talking to your Doctor if you have any health issue. Exercise being advised in depth by self appointed experts will get you in trouble. Trainers at gyms have dubious training at best.
Your best bet is your own Doctor as the starting point.

Alligator wrestling and snorting ground-up scorpion stingers. Scorpions, especially black emperor scorpions, have a hormone in their stingers called cardomine. It speeds up the metabolism like a V8 engine, so you burn fat like a monster. Just don't snort the venom. You'll die.
