It really depends ~ if it's a bunch of long time friends inviting you to a bbq, then jeans is fine. If it's your boss, I would say tailored pants in a non-business suit colour and an open neck shirt in a more casual style.
If it's a person who falls somewhere in between, or someone you don't know well, go with the slightly more dressy option until you know what the people are like.
Don't go completely 'casual' (i.e., shorts and t-shirt) unless you know them very well and know this is what they usually wear.
Although many men do wear 'lounge' suits which are suitable for casual wear ~ they're usually made of linen or cotton, and have a more informal style and cut, a business suit would not be considered casual.
Good luck and have a great time :-)

Here's a story: I was told to dress "casual" at two pre-wedding parties. I wore a pair of chinos, sports jacket with shirt and tie at both. At the first, I was totally overdressed -- everyone wore short sleaved shirts and jeans. At the second, just the opposite --- everone wore suits and ties (to that crowd, "casual" meant no tuxedos). So to this day, I'm still at a loss what that word means.

Casual means comfortable.
The most casual you should ever dress for an office setting is jeans, polo shirt, and gym shoes.
The most casual you should ever dress for public is shorts slippers (flip flops) and t-shirt.
The most casual you should ever dress in your house is nothing short of your skin. LOL!

Basically it means jeans and a shirt. Casual dress is what you might ordinarily wear to kick around in on a day off. You know, relaxing clothes.

Slacks, nice shirt. One step up from jeans, but one step down from a suit and tie.
