Well, I color my own hair for about 10 years now and I have a friend who works at a hair salon for 8 years now she tells me what I need to do to get my desired hair color. Have you thought about an auburn red tint but inside look light brown? Black hair is #7, which means its really hard to lighten it to your desired hair color sometimes if you don't bleach your hair you won't get your hair lighten to blonde. But because you only desired to be a light brown or so then your best bet is to go to Albertsons and buy a hair color that is 3 shades lighter than your hair. When you are coloring your hair and this is the first time you are doing them, you must put it for longer. TEst it first before color your hair. cut a piece of your hair then test it and time it. More likely for dark hair to get lighten you have to let it stand for a minimum of 30 minutes up to 1 hour. to get your hair ligten faster get a plastic bag over your colored hair to create heat to get your hair lighten faster. Then after 30 min. check your hair every 5 min to make sure you get the color you want.
I hope that helps.

There are no dyes on there own that will lighten dark hair more than one shade or half a shade. You have to bleach first to get the desired colour.

You can't use products you already have. Don't bleach it.
Go to Sally's and buy SALONCARE COLOR CORRECTOR. It costs 12.99 and it strips that artificial color out of your hair nearly completely. Use the directions that have you mix equal amounts of solution and shampoo (use only half the solution first...directions in the box) , and if it doesn't work, try it once more. If it STILL doesn't work, you can mix the two straight together and apply it to your hair. It'll get rid of the color.
I use it often to take black color out of my hair (I'm a chronic color changer since to have my hair colored costs me nothing) and it doesn't damage the hair like bleaching does, and you can re-color immediately after using the ColorCorrector.

Without knowing exactly what you used to color your hair it is difficult to instruct you on removing it. However, try washing it with dawn dish soap. Condition it heavily afterwards as you will strip all of your natural oils. Then shampoo in VERY HOT water using Suave or other generic brand shampoo.

Permanent dye is really tough to get out, but, my hair dresser has always told me not to wash my hair for 48 hours after dying it because it will help the color last longer, so I would say get in the shower and shampoo, shampoo, shampoo!

I know this sounds funny but you can use tide laundry detergent or dawn dishwashing detergent for about your next 3 shampoos and it will lightening up dramatically. make sure you are using a moisturizing conditioner while you do this.

I did that once. Went back up to the store and bought the whitest blonde they had... no effect. Bought it again, still no effect. Was desperate, coming up on Thanksgiving weekend and I was to be a bridesmaid. Went to a salon, they put stripper in it and I walked out a happy camper. Just do the salon thingee.
