To many, Buddhism goes beyond religion and is more of a philosophy or 'way of life'. It is a philosophy because philosophy 'means love of wisdom' and the Buddhist path can be summed up as:

(1) to lead a moral life,
(2) to be mindful and aware of thoughts and actions, and
(3) to develop wisdom and understanding.

theres the common misconception that Buddhists are atheists. But the teachings of the Buddha do not include the nonexistence of god, or the nonexistence of the soul. In its core its very reassuring of those concepts, as in Buddhism, what doesn't really exist is the self.
Buddhism is the answer of one enlightened man, Siddhārtha , to the suffering of men. And, the confusion above may come from the fact that Buddhism centers its answer to the problem in man and not god, making the end of suffering a priority here and now, and not after death. A very good book about the life of the Buddha would be "Buddha", by Karen Amstrong, and an excellent book as an introduction to Buddhism is "The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching" by Thich Nhat Hanh.

What sold me on it was 2 main points:

1) It bends the faith to fit the facts; it adheres to known science

2) In order to be a good Buddhist you must NOT believe anything simply told to you by a monk or nun or read out of a holy book. You are supposed to investigate and question everything and only accept it if it fits. If not discard it or set it aside to be tested more skillfully at a later time when you have more facts.

I highly recommend checking out www.bswa.org and watching the video dharma talks, especially the ones by Ajahn Brahm. He is a Cambridge England University PhD in theoretical physics that became a buddhist monk, and has been for almost 30 years. He's funny and one smart cookie. Check out his talk on "Buddhism and Sects" and "Meditation" to get a good idea of Buddhism, the different variants, and what meditation is about. The link is below.

The 4 noble truths are:

-Life is suffering
-There is a cause of that suffering (desire/wanting because when we desire/want something we make our selves discontent as we do not accept the moment as it is in truth but mentally fight or dislike it)
-Suffering can be ceased (you can be utterly content)
-There is a path you can take to get you to where suffering has finally ceased. (Methods of practice to get you there at your own speed)

meditation plays a BIG role, just FYI.

Buddhism is a philosophy, a way of being and seeing, rather than a religion. In a nutshell, you can pick and choose what aspects work for you and practice them. Meditation is encouraged, as it allows for self awareness and detachment, which allows for peace and clarity in your life. Enlightenment of self is the goal, as it were.

There is no God, but there is God.... God as it exists within each of us, waiting to be discovered. Buddha achieved enlightenment, and then stayed on in order to teach what he had discovered to others. But he was not the first, nor the last - enlightenment means you are the Buddha yourself. Freedom from social conditioning, leading to total self-responsibility, the cultivation of compassion and wisdom. A few aspects. Unless you go with Zen. Then all bets are off. lol

While I won't claim to be an expert on Buddhism, I know enough about it to know it isn't in any way, shape or form of "evil". The core of Buddhism lies in the Four Noble Truths.

A Buddhist takes a simple approach at life and focuses on their enlightenment for the better of all. Buddhists use meditation and deep inner reflection to follow a righteous path. It is a peaceful and accepting religion and way of life.

Theravada Buddhists believe that our suffering comes from our attachment to worldly things. If we like something then we are unhappy when it is absent and if we dislike something then we are unhappy when it is present. Preference brings about suffering. So we try to end our suffering by following the noble Eightfold Path, a way to detach ourselves. You can probably find more info here: http://www.buddhanet.net

I was a buddhist for some time.

It is a great religion.

I don't know why I fell out of it, but I still live by many of its tenants to this day.

*There is no god

*There is not soul

*There is Karma
(The scientific term is "Cause and Effect")

* Anything PROVEN false in the Dhrama(Buddhist Bible) CAN BE CHANGED TO A PROVEN FACT

It's the only good religion
