I just heard it on the news. As another poster said, the need is suspended, but you will need proof that you applied for a passport - so go ahead and apply but make sure you keep your "proof" that you applied.

You are a little too soon on that news.
The US government is considering it and will probably do just that very soon. However they have not done so yet. In addition that is only for plane and boat travel to Mexico and Canada, no other locations in the world. Important note, this will only apply to people who can show their application receipt for a passport.
Also if they do suspend this requirement, it will only be for about 6 months.

basically carry a single appropriate passport. You in no way be attentive to once you're searched and in maximum worldwide places, 2 passports will effect in you being detained if no longer outright arrested. leave your suspended passport at homestead.

I heard it on the evening news in Canada today, since it apparently also applies to Canadians who want to enter the U.S. But I believe that you have to be able to show proof that you applied for a passport but it couldn't be processed before your trip.
A minute later: before I sent this, I Googled for a news story and found this wire service report from Associated Press today: http://kob.com/article/Pstories/S106614.shtml This explains the proposed arrangements.

To my knowledge, and from internet sites I have contacted, passport applications to Mexico or Canada have not been suspended. My niece and her husband, who are certified teachers within their state in the U.S. did have a delay in receiving their passports to travel to Ireland this summer; but, I understand everyone who is "applying" for a passport to leave the U.S. for travel into any other country is experiencing the same. My niece and her husband are U.S. certified teachers who received a U.S. Department of Education grant to travel to Ireland, leaving in two weeks; yet, they only received their passports yesterday even though monies had been deposited with airlines.
I hope the U.S. Government will be adamant about requiring everyone leaving this county and going into Mexico and Canada "needs" a passport; which means that anyone leaving the U.S. and wanting to return to the U.S. must present documentation that they will be accepted back into the U.S.
"Bureaucratic" governmental influence will continue to determine "legal" and "illegal" status in the United States. Charlie Chaplin was considered a "threat" to the morals of the American public, and because he did not apply for a "passport" when he left the U.S. to return to England, was denied entrance back into the U.S.
Native American tribes, of which I am a member, were also considered to be a "threat", denied "citizenship" until the 30's. My "people" were accepted into the military, fought valiantly during the War Between the States, WWI, and WWII; but were subjected to ridicule for being "injuns", and relegated to military assignments and barracks "white" people would have considered "abominable".
Today, there are more Indian casinos in the U.S. than casinos operated by "private, corporate" casinos. Indian tribes, recognized by the American government as Sovereign Nations, are a much bigger threat to the American government than Charlie Chaplin ever was! American law enforcement agencies, Federal, state, county, or city, have no authority to come upon Indian land and enforce any Federal, state, county, or city law!
My grandmother was a graduate of the Cherokee National Female Seminary in Tahlequah, Oklahoma in 1902. I have a copy of her diploma. My brother has her original sheepskin diploma. Am I proud of my ancestors? You bet I am! Am I proud of state legislators, Federal senators and congressmen for the "namby-pamby" stance on illegal immigration"? No, I am not!
My mother's parents were descendants of Irish, German immigrants who were allowed to vote long before my father's Native American ancestors, who were in this country hundreds of years before my mother's parents!
The "need" for a passport is only another "method" for our "bureatric" government to "make" money and "control" the people of the United States.
Law-abiding citizens of any country, those who believe they are not "breaking" any laws, are always at risk. Millions of Jews went to their death under Nazism, disbelieving that anyone could hate them so much!
I want the U.S. to suspend passports from the U.S. to Mexico, Canada, Cuba. Russia, China, Africa, Iraq, Iran, India, Pakistan, Italy, Ireland, England, Wales, or any other country who does not support my "individual rights", my "right to pursue an education", my "right" to operate a business, my "right" to be me!
