Check with your vet first, but a normal, healthy dog can have 25mg Benadryl per 25lbs body weight for sedation up to twice daily (12hrs apart).
I give my 12 year old Lab 75mg (she's 78lb) for sedation during thunderstorms. Other people I know give it when travelling.
But ask your vet first.
Hope this helps! :-D

My vet has had me giving my dogs and cats diphenhydramine for years. It not only relieves itching but acts as a mild sedative too. My pit bull does not like fireworks and the gunshots we get on July 1 and New Years. I would never medicate my dog without my vet's approval. Diphenhydramine is the generic name for Benadryl and store brands are much less expensive. The dosage is 25mg per 25 lbs of dog. For smaller dogs break them in half. I break them in half for my cats. It does them no harm and work very well.
It is easy to have them on hand at home when you need it than have a need during your vet's off hours.
I would ask your vet next time you are there.
If your dog is stung by a wasp or a bee the best thing you can do is give them diphenhydramine immediately and seek vet attention if there are swelling or breathing problems. Giving the medication gives you a head start before seeing the vet.

When my dog had surgery for a torn ACL, she kept trying to bite whenever someone took off the plastic sleeve she had to have on over her cast when it was wet outside (smart dog, never tried to bite when it was put ON so she could go out to relieve herself, only when it came time to take it OFF! ;) ).
Anyway, the surgeon/vet told me to give her Benadryl to calm her down. If you think about it, doesn't Benadryl make you sleepy when you take it? It does for most people I know.
That said, it's important that you use the correct type (check ingredient labels) and check with your vet to get the correct dosage for his size. See this link to veterinary uses of medications, side effects, and precautions for Benadryl and other drugs: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/benadryl.html

Benedryl is not a seditive, it works like a mild steroid. Might stop an itch, but the dog isn't going to get sleepy or anything.

There are herbal PET remedies that you can buy to calm your dog. One is called "Quiet Moments". It is much safer than giving him human medications that your are unsure of. Look in the pet department of Walmart or in Petco.

Animals do not have the same digestive processes as humans. We use HCL to aide in digestion, but animals do not. Giving a drug meant for a human to an animal is not recommended by anyone with any sense.

Do not give your dog any human medications without consulting a vet first. You could be trying to help, but end up hurting or possibly killing him instead.

Tom I is right is not a sedative at all, Its to control the symptoms of allergies. Some dogswho take this makes them hyper. If you need a sedative for your dog talk to your vet. Not here on Q&A's.
