why do non-christians like to say...God is so "VIOLENT" IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, and so loving in the New?

let me explain to you all once and for all.

we humans DO NOT dictate WHO or WHAT GOD IS. we do not say God should be loving thats why if He is "violent" He is wrong. AS much as He is LOVING, HE IS ALSO righteous. and Perfect.

He is RIGHTEOUS - meaning HE CANNOT TOLERATE SIN. and EVIL. if He must wipe out sin to save the majority innocent, then HE WILL DO IT, which He does in the Old testament. so just accept that the Christian God does WIPE out sin if He has to.

He is HOLY - in His presence there cannot be evil, no breach of holiness/contract.

HE is LOVING - He gave His Son to die for us.

so don't whine and say, "why is your God so "EVIL" yet so loving in the New Testament??"

simple: because God is righteous, holy, perfect and is A JUDGE, a King. yet, also a loving God

Hi Rev Kev,

God allows free choice. humans choose to deny God to the end. hell was made for angels. not men.

snooter,

just accept the fact the the Christian God is as such.

a Judge and a King.

when you do something wrong, do you argue with the Judge in court? would you sound foolish?

KKINGS,

it is unfair in your eyes, because you are a sinner like me, imperfect. God is perfect. of COURSE there will be a different standard!

Sun,

the Laws are so "violent" and "immoral" in your eyes.

but read the Laws in context, that you will realise that God gives more mercy for a sinner to repent. more than punitive actions.

and the LAws were written for the Jews at that time, to protect them. and every Jew KNOWS VERY CLEARLY their whole lives what is right and wrong.

still some people will CHOOSE to do wrong wilfully.

and naturally, when you choose to do something wilfully, there will be consequences!

worshipful heart,

my pastor has taught us that God is not what we want Him to be.

He is who He is. righteous, holy, a Judge and is Love.

quackers,

yes even new born babies.

what does a new born baby do when it first comes out of the womb?

cry! it cries for attention. the human nature is self-centred from beginning to the end.

and it is up to God to save their souls if He has decided to destroy the world.

furious Blue,

if you understand, at the point of Noah's Ark, there were not many people on the earth yet.

all these people were supposed to know God but all have turned away from Him.

give you an example. the Chinese. do you know that the Chinese after Noah's Ark time used to worship One God, and calls Him God of Heaven and earth? the chinese did not allow idols or statues to be built too. but look at the chinese now. they are one of the peoples who build the most idols to worship!

wiam A,

understand that prophets of God must be revered, and not mocked.

but the parents of the children must surely have failed to educate their children not to mock prophets of GOD.

unfortunately, it is perpetuated by Christians who reject the OT and have little to no understanding of the relationship between the two. Often Christians preach as if the God of the OT and the God of the NT are two different gods, it is no wonder there is confusion amongst those that have not read the Bible at all.

Hmm,

God drowns the world in Genesis and in Exodus kill all the first born. Not to mention all the sacking and burning and conquering of villages and towns.

And reading all those cruel rules in Leviticus! Anyone who would follow god's rules in Leviticus is either doing something felonious, or engaging a behavior that is probably close to being a psychopath. Remember, god is the one laying down these rules for us to follow.

And yet, not even issuing one word about slavery being evil, unless, you believe the slavery is NOT evil. In fact, god condones slavery in the OT.

I do not say the OT god is violent, but the evidence supports this conclusion.

Loving? Interesting. What are some examples of loving?

Would you say that a mother is loving? If her son falls in the pool and cannot swim, would you say that she dives in and rescues him? Even if she couldn't swim, would you say that she would at least WANT to save her child?

Would you say a soup kitchen operator is loving? If he sees a man who is unable to buy food, does he provide food to the homeless man?

When a man's brother is dying and requires a kidney, would it be loving of the man to have one of his kidneys transplanted to his brother so he may live? Even knowing that this could ultimately cost him his life, would this man willingly give a part of his life to save his dying brother?

These are all examples of loving.

They also happen while God does nothing. God would be capable of feeding the hungry, rescuing the drowning, and healing the ill. Yet, he does nothing. So, how can you call a god loving when mortals have shown a greater capacity for love than he has.

You may say that God is righteous and holy. I won't argue those (except that I've never met anyone holy who would allow a man to suffer just for a dare). But loving? I'm sorry, but even the blind can see that God's actions in the Bible are anything but loving.

A truly loving god wouldn't even need to send his son. He would have the power to save us and would WANT to use it.

Edit: You mention that man has free will. So does a child who wanders too close to the street. Does a loving mother not intervene and prevent the child from going into the street, thus squelching his free will? If a mortal woman can show such a capacity for love that she's willing to suppress free will that leads to destruction, why is God incapable of this love?

Please take a glance on the style of situations that Paul makes use of words that refer to our Almighty God and our Lord Jesus Christ the two. Matthew 28:19, 20 - we are baptized interior the call of the father, Son, and the holy spirit. His presence interior the recent testomony is from Matthew to Revelation. interpreting the Psalms will provide expressions of God's love from the old testomony.

So every human on the face of the Earth was so sinful that your loving god had to drown them all? Even the newborn babies? Even the animals that are incapable of sin? how is that perfect, holy or loving?

Hmm... let's see... someone who commits genocide (great flood, anyone?), yet not only can't be called "violent" but must be regarded as "righteous, holy, and perfect". Sounds like God made at least ONE man in his own image: Adolf Hitler.

Those who say this are primarily the muslims. They do this to justify their shameless crimes and violence. The same way they justify muhammad's polygamy with Solomon's multiple wives. One claims to be a prophet, yet behaves like a sexual pervert. The other is trying to compare themselves with beings beyond their league.

They have no understanding.

A perfect God would not have to destroy the world that He made and start over.

A loving God would not allow hell to exist nor would he condone murder, genocide, rape, slavery, etc. etc.

The Christian God in neither perfect nor loving.

He's violent in both. He can't bother to lift a finger to save non-believers, and condemns them to hell and you call that LOVING?? please. Why would you want to worship the God of the Bible even if it were true? I know I wouldn't!
