I think it is an easy excuse- a way to make others believe that ones motives are righteous, but if one digs deeper than just the surface, one will find that wars are rarely fought over religion- the root is almost always power and wealth

Yes, that is exactly it. People throughout history have used religion as a tool to start wars and get rich. Nowadays, politicians use religion as a tool to win votes and gain power. Some things never change.

I think most are over money and power, sometimes religion is used as a cover. How often do you see statements about the war in Iraq is over oil yet most of the posts R & S has say religion

Wars are started over resources. Money is one of the most powerful resources right now.
Wars are FOUGHT over beliefs. The individual soldiers must have a reason to stay in the field.
When the US was fighting its civil war over resources, the North realized they would lose if they could not get more support. They changed the beliefs of the war to make it a war for equality. They gained the support they needed to win.
Many Irish immigrants who were fighting the war deserted when the belief structure of the war changed. They had been fighting for rights for industrial workers, but would NOT fight for an increase in unskilled manual laborers in the North. Many were punished (tortured) for deserting, but few cared because the belief structure of the war had changed thus causing them to LOOK like they were against equality.

It is mainly a tool to cover up greed for more power, land, and money. And they don't realize that they are making others hate religion because of it. To tell you the truth, they just don't care so long as they get what they want. There is more to a person than the eye can see, just like there can be more to a story than they are letting on. They just don't want you to know the truth because they want you on their side so they can win.

Nice, I agree that most wars are fought over greed (for land, power, etc.). Religion is usually (not always) just an excuse.

Which wars did they initiate? Be specific. List sources. Or are you just talking out of your head?

You will never get masses of people needed for a war to get themselves killed for a bank or a rich man to get richer. You can get them in droves if you convince them God wants them to fight. Of course, God is far removed from the whole idea.
