I think how, why, and who you ask are more important than what you ask.

Ask anything you want, as long as you can direct it in an appropriate way, for an ethical reason, or to the right person - meaning the person responsible for that information, or with the authority to settle the matter, or at the very least someone who would not be harmed by the question.

For instance, you could ask any number of sources and authorities what it's like to have a D&C. I don't believe you're entitled to ask a woman who has just had one because she lost a child and is grieving. Unless she knows that you are in the same situation, and you want to know what to prepare yourself for - and you have the sort of relationship where you know she'd be willing to share that experience with you.

People need an appropriate barrier of privacy that limits our entitlement to ask.
