Yes, it's illegal. More imporantly, why would you want to? DUH! (See below)

(CBS) VENICE, Calif. An 18-year-old man was rescued by Los Angeles County lifeguards and treated for hypothermia after jumping off Venice pier "to see what it was like," according to authorities.

Two lifeguards wearing wetsuits lifeguards rescued the teenager around 11 on Tuesday. He was clinging to a pylon in the ocean’s chilly waters when he was found, said Los Angeles County Life Guard Capt. Terry Hearst.

According to Hearst, the man was about 150 to 200 yards from shore. Authorities are not sure how long he had been in the water, but it was long enough for him to have become hypothermic.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics performed various warming measures, then took the man to Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital at 11:49 p.m, said department spokesman Brian Humphrey. The man is listed in fair condition.

Hearst said the authorities are still unsure of why the man -- fully clothed -- jumped into the water off the pier at the end of Washington Boulevard. He told rescuers that he was not suicidal or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

After the jump was reporte, two lifeguard swift response boats and more than 20 ground-based rescuers -- including lifeguards and firefighters -- searched for the man.

The Fire Department was prepared to lower rescuers into the water, but, based on the man's location, a water-based rescue was deemed preferable, Humphrey said.

Humphrey said that the man “was shivering so badly that it was difficult from him to speak" once he was brought on land. "His jaw was quivering so much, it was difficult to understand him."

But the man did manage to get out the words, "to see what it was like," when asked why he had jumped, Humphrey said.

According to Hearst, county lifeguards have rescued about a dozen pier jumpers this year.

"We get these all the time," said Hearst, who estimated that about half of the jumpers wound up being under the influence while the other half were attempting suicide.

The LAPD was summoned to the scene, but Pacific Station officers said the incident was not under investigation.

The same thing happens in Santa Monica. That water is COLD year round. People don't realize how long of a swim it is.

So, do the right thing, and DON'T.

All of you needa chill the **** out. I live in SoCal and go to SM pier like every friday night after partying or just for an adventure. It's not even that bad jumping off the pier, I do it for adrenaline and a fun time with friends. But if you aren't fit enough to swim like 5 mins to shore, then stay on da sand kook!

The entertainment park isn't as sturdy as Disney Land or Knot ts Berry farm, besides the fact that that's a exciting few hours. I additionally advise you bypass to the videos, e book shops, eating places and probable some buying alongside the third highway prom. That blended with the pier is a competent day in Santa Monica. there is sufficient parking at the two places.and that they are with in strolling distance of another.

Why would you want to? The Santa Monica Bay is polluted from so many raw sewage spills. Just stick your head in a toilet, and you'll get the same effect. You're just hitting the water before it gets pumped into the bay as opposed to afterward.
