I eat well - lots of water, vegies, boneless skinless chicken, two servings of fruit a day, very little bread, no desserts. My cardio is 4 times a week - 45 minutes on the treadmill - and strength training upper and lower body on alternate days. I quit smoking in January and first put on about 6 pounds quickly and then all of sudden put on 2 to 3 pounds per week for three weeks in a row. I had my thyriod checked and it is normal. I tried going off Prempro - the hrt rx - for three weeks and no change in my weight. Because of the return of hot flashes, irritability, and trouble sleeping I went back on it. I am 5'4 inches and weigh 166. Help!!!!!

I added over 40 pounds when I quit smoking... I took it off slowly and have managed to keep it off.
Add walking to your exercise routine 3 or 4 days a week. If you have no place to walk, walk the mall or supermarket ..
I hope you are getting 3 servings of calcium and vitamin D a day. This is the time of life when you can have bone loss with no symptoms.
Research shows that a low dose of prempro is beneficial for a few years before you are age 65; wait until you have really conquered the smoking addiction before you wean yourself from hormone therapy.
If it comes down to it, a splurge on dessert now and then is better than facing another craving .... we don't want you going back to smoking.
Take your time on this weight thing. I had such a hard time quiting cigarettes that I decided to allow myself a full year without thinking about my weight.
It might just be me but I had no luck at all on a stationary bike or treadmill when it comes to taking the weight off ... I have to really walk and ride a real bike. The strength training is great for your bones.... don't give it up... remember that muscles weigh more than fat....
One last hint/help .... do not rely so much on the scales... Get a tape measure. Be sure to record you waist; hips, thighs, calves and biceps. Check these measurements weekly. You will see improvement.
Keep up the good work. It will pay off!!

First of all, congratulation for quitting smoking ! That is a great accomplishment !
The reason why you don't lose any weight is simply that your calorie balance is probably 0. Since your calorie intaking is adequate, you should try to burn a little bit more calorie. You already have a great setting by training 4 times a week. I would recommend to focus on a bit more on cardio training during your 45 min than on weights. That change could burn 200 more calorie overall every training. So after some weeks that should pay off. By focusing on cardio training, you will also get cardiovascular benefits.
The problem with weight training is that for the same time spent, you usually lose less calorie. And you usually create weight by building your muscles.

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

the reason you can't lose weight and are gaining weight, is because of a hormonal imbalance. like you said, your menopausal so your hormones are all in an uproar. this is going to sound horrible, but give it 6-months to a year and you should be back to being hormonally balanced and normal! then you can lose and gain weight as you please again. unfortunately after you go through menopause, your metabolism will usually slow down so it may be harder, but still possible, to gain and lose weight as you please.
I know its really hard to quit smoking and i'm really proud of you! good job!

lbs. lost = calories needed-calories consumed x 3000 cal/lg.
You must be taking in more cal. than you are burning. Try writing down everthing you eat, and when you eat it, with a running total of calories.
