As a Christian I wonder this myself.
If someone is an athiest - they obviously don't agree with the Bible, so why even quote it?
I think the reason is because in the Christian community the Bible is our 'book' - it's where we get information, and so much spiritual guidance that some Christians believe it will be a help to others.
Don't know if this answers your question or not.

They feel that this proves that their point is God's and not theirs. They are, of course, wrong about this, since even if one were to accept that God was the author (and bypassed the brains and personalities of the human authors), they are still assuming that an English translation communicates precisely the meaning God intended in the original languages.
It would be great if, at the very least, they could show some understanding of what the Bible is and what is involved in interpreting it by EXPLAINING their quotation, why they think it is relevant to the issue in relation to which they are quoting it, what the key terms mean in the original languages, why they think this translation is a good one, and so on. This is Yahoo! Answers after all, not Yahoo! Unjustified Assumptions!
You can pretend all you want that you are simply delivering a message from God, that it is all clear-cut and nothing is "lost in translation". But alas, there are many educated people on this forum who know that things are not so simple, and if you wish to persuade them then you have to do better.

Why should we take your word that you are you? You could just be pretending to be you but be someone else!
The Bible is source authority for what we say. It alone has answers for things we can not know about ourselves.
Has anyone been dead for a few days and returned? Has anyone been a spirit creature? Has anyone jumped in their time machine and traveled to the distant past or future?
It is true many people quote the Bible and interpet it wrongly. Letting the Bible interpet itself though is the proper way to go. Other scriptures will back up a true Bible principle to get at the proper interpetation. If they don't, we have it wrong and must look again.
I could tell you anything and if you are stupid enough to take my word for it, I have a wonderful opportunity in real estate I'd like to talk to you about. A fool and his money are soon parted. If, however, I back up an answer about faith & religion with the Bible's viewpoint and you look it up for yourself, then it is the right answer.

Hi;
I am a student/teacher of the manuscripts; I do not like cut and paste answers, and I quote a Bible verse only when it
is absolutely necessary as part of the answer. I use my own
words, my own explanation. What is it you have a question about? I would be more than happy to answer it clearly and
in a way that you will understand; lay it on me.

The only reason I quote verses is show the Christians that the verse is actually in the Bible, and so they can't just deny that it exists.
As for Christians, they seem to think that by quoting the Bible, it'll magically convert everybody.

We were given a guide book by our creator. So you would take the word of some disfunctional retard and accept that as fact but a loving creator who wants to tell us how to live to be happy and a good citizen you don't want to hear that?
He made the sun, and moon and stars and this huge emense universe. We are his first human creations and as his children he wants to help us to live full lives.
He made an abundance of plants, animals and humans.
Can you make a tree? Without a seed just make a new specie of tree? Where was you when he created the Universe? Let's just say he knows more than humans so to quote him just makes perfect sense.

Dude people always want to act like Christians are the only one quoting. Atheists and most other beliefs will quote either out of memory or something else they learned from a book.. most of our beliefs or ideas, come from researching and majority of the time, it's from some kinda book.. give it up.... always the same whining about the same thing. WHO CARES what book you quote from??? A book is a book is a dang book....

you are asking us what we believe and there is no better source, for us, to answer you with than the Bible. If you ask a question that the bible has already answered, I, atleast, am going to answer with what the bible said.
