If not, what does excommunication mean to you? Does it not mean damnation?

We view excommunication as a process of repentance. A person is responsible for living up to his knowledge and covenants he's made with the Lord. If a person is incapable of living how he should, it is better to remove the responsability for a time. Those that are excommunicated are still encouraged to attend meetings and grow in the gospel to a point where they can again live up to the promises made at baptism and shown that they have repented of those actions that caused the excommmunication.

Unlike most Christians, we do not believe in salvation or damnation, heaven or hell, and nothing else.

Excommunication is to separate a person from the covenants they made at baptism, and, if necessary, in the temple. If one has so seriously broken one covenant, then s/he must be excused from them all, in order for complete repentance to take place, if that is what the excommunicant desires.

Salvation is only through commitment to the teachings of Jesus Christ, as taught by His Restored Church. This can happen in this life or the next. Excommunication is a stern warning that I am in need of repenting and coming back into the fold.

i'm LDS. There some great responses on your question. regrettably some responses paint a photo of exclusivity. we don't have faith we are extra desirable, extra enjoyed by potential of God, or have unique rights to Salvation of eternal existence. We have faith that once it is all reported and achieved (after Judgment) that people who incredibly accompanied Christ, meaning they understood the plan in it is entirety and tried to stay with that plan to the ideal of their own potential would be saved. As area of that plan we do have faith that there are concepts and ordinances of the Gospel that are necessary for Salvation. We have faith that absolutely everyone will get carry of an threat to settle for God's plan or no longer and while Judgment happens, Jesus shouldn't say, "Are you a Mormon? ok, then you extremely can enter." The question would be whether or no longer we made effective we knew what the plan replaced into and took each of the essential steps interior that plan to stay with God returned. So our venture is to make effective all of us comprehend what His plan is and what steps we could desire to take. those of the Mormon faith in basic terms have faith that we've some thing considerable to furnish absolutely everyone bearing directly to this plan.

Depending on what warrants your excommunication, but in any event, you're excluded from the top tier of heaven, which is reserved ONLY for mormons.

Someone remarked once to me that a the celestial kingdom was like an eternal 'fast and testimony' sacrament meeting.

If he's right, that's an eternity in hell.

They have three heavens, so to speak. The top one, the Celestial kingdom, is really only for Mormons. But pretty much everyone else is a winner since they get to go to one of the other kingdoms. Outer darkness is like hell, and the way they described it to me, it was pretty hard to get sent there.
