The primary reason that people are skeptical is because of the exaggeration and hype that surrounds this issue. The Al Gore movie is a very good example.

Al Gore used a mix of some factual material and nonfactual material and exaggeration to make his film.

When people see a mix of exaggeration and non factual material they tend to discount everyrhing associated with it, including the factual material.

I describe it as "The Boy Who Cried Wolf Syndrome"

You may remember the legend of "The Boy who Cried Wolf" The boy cried wolf to get the attention of the villagers when there was no wolf. The villagers quickly learned not to believe the boy when he cried wolf.

Unfortunately one day there really was a wolf. However when the boy cried wolf, none of the villagers believed him and none of the villagers came to the boys rescue.

Unfortunately for the boy, the wolf ate him.

The way I and many of my colleagues see it, Al Gore is the boy who cried wolf.

...................and yet all it takes is a few facts to bring the "facts" about global warming down.

Oh, wow, Al Gore and several other thousand democrats would cheer for this question right about now. "Global warming is ruining us, coastlines will be flooded and we will all die! Let's start driving hybrids and using solar panels and we will all be safe!"

SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Global warming is one of the dumbest, stupidest, and ridiculous theories out there. Oh no, the temperature is raising. I'm sure our climate has never gone through changes in temperature before, this must be the first time..........NOT!

It's stupid to assume that just because the temperatures have gone up a bit that the Earth is going into a "global warming." Our climate has gone through changes before, it's stupid and ignorant to assume that it is the issue now. And the do you know how much the temperature has raised (According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)? .6 degrees Celsius OVER THE LAST CENTURY. That is so significant, isn't it? I don't think so either.

And this slight SLIGHT raise in temp isn't our fault at all. Half of the global warming of the last century has happened between 1900 and 1945. If it was our fault, it would have happened more recently, seeing as we have been burning more fuel more recently.

So don't buy into the crap about how global warming will wreck us, it's all a bunch of stupid political garbage.

Because of:
1. False hype, mostly by politically motivated people. This lends the lie image to the whole issue.
2. Different groups select only the data they want to present, rather than all the data, so no consistency of facts and numbers.
3. It has happened in fairly recent history before...look and check the period from 800 thru 1300 AD...reference in the Wikopedia to the MWP. And this was without "greenhouse gases" or modern industry...and it went away!
4. The "solutions" presented as the "only" escape are hardly palatable, and rife with opportunities for rascals to become rich off them. Such as the "Carbon Credits" that are in such deep trouble now with cheating and lying and insider deals.
5. The various groups differ on which solution(s) will work and which will not. If the problem is a myth, then solutions can be almost anything!
6. Too much factual data is not included in a lot of the presentations, such as issues of flaring off natural gas at oil wells...makes lots of CO2, but do not hear many plans to stop THAT source, and the records of history tend to be rounded off to prove points both ways, so if history is being deliberately distorted, global warming could in fact be a myth..

Probably other more minor reasons for some people, also. Maybe a feeling we need to be punished for past sins.

There are dozens of facts too that make one to wonder if this is real, or if it is just the normal earth cycles and folks are jumping to the wrong conclusions.

What does global warming mean? Is the earth warming? It seems that way. Has the earth warmed and cooled in the millions of years it has existed? Yes. What were the causes? Why are some so convinced that this warming is man-induced? Why does Al Gore have to distort the facts to get his point across? What if it's not? What if it is? What are you willing to do to stop it? Are you willing to go to war to force the rest of the world to do what some believe will reduce man's effect? How much are you willing to spend personally? How much should you ask others to spend? Finally how much real data(with real thermometers) do we have? A couple hundred years. Everything else is modeled? The real answer is ask these people to tell you whether it will rain next Sunday.

Dozens of facts? I would like you to point them out.

In case you didn't know, man made global warming is a THEORY. It has not been proven. There is no indisputable evidence that global warming exists. Just pretty graphs that show irrelevant data.

Yes CO2 and temperature are related. When temperature increases, water evaporates and the CO2 is released. If you didn't know already, water absorbs CO2. Don't forget a majority of the earth's surface is water.

People are stupid and buys into whatever the media is selling. Remember anthorax? Shark attacks? West nile? Global warming is no different. And this theory has become so popular, there is actually money to be made off of it. Think about Toyota and GE with all their green ads. Also the government is considering hefty taxes on vehicles based on emissions.

Fox news did a survey. 90% of all people believe in global warming. That's pretty scary.

The issue of global warming has become politicized because it threatens established industrial practices and production of goods which have previously been utilized and/or sold without a sense of limit, finiteness, or much accountability re: long term implications. Successful business depends on remaining competitive for markets, profit, and valuation of stock for public corporations. When businesses' profit margins, potential and existing markets, and stock prices are threatened by shifts in public consciousness (regarding health concerns involving these business practices or products, for example) which can lead to shifts in governmental policies to regulate industrial behaviors or production (or policies to encourage new technologies/processes/products that may supplant more "traditional" ones), the industry's fear prompts and elicits counter-arguments around this shift in public consciousness - in this case re: Global Warming patterns. And, because most of these older technology business owners want to protect profits, they tend to be politically conservative. Conservative governments also fear that any sudden change in traditional methods of keeping the economy strong - a la "environmentalists" seeking broad change in ecological protections policies that may affect current practices of production - may affect the national economy and upset economic growth and balance. Global Warming then becomes politicized, with statistics becoming distorted and reduced to sound-bites for the populace to buy into in order to support their "team", liberal vs. conservative. One might continue to question what motivations are behind the different sides in the "controversy" surrounding Global Warming.

From The Washington Post (see source link):
"Since 1800 there's been modest global warming. I'm unqualified to judge between those scientists (the majority) who blame man-made greenhouse gases and those (a small minority) who finger natural variations in the global weather system. But if the majority are correct, the IEA (International Energy Agency) report indicates we're now powerless. We can't end annual greenhouse emissions, and once in the atmosphere, the gases seem to linger for decades. So concentration levels rise. They're the villains; they presumably trap the world's heat. They're already about 36 percent higher than in 1800. Even with its program, the IEA says another 45 percent rise may be unavoidable. How much warming this might create is uncertain; so are the consequences."

Maybe because....

It was warmer in the 30's than now

CO2 levels rise AFTER the temperature increases

None of Al Gore's charts have labels

CO2 is the weakest greenhouse gas on Earth

How much has the temperature risen? 0.6 degrees. Now that's frightening!!!

Greenland and Antarctica are both growing in height, just not in area

The underwater conveyor belt regulates Earth's temperature

Trees eat up CO2, more CO2, bigger trees.

I could go on, and on, and on.

The UN believes global warming is happening.

The ice mass in the West Antarctic is growing at a rate of over 26 gigatons a year. This reverses a melting trend that had persisted for the previous 6,000 years.

Because the 'facts' that support global warming span less than 100 years, which is not a long time as far as the world is concerned. How do you know it's due to fossil fuels and not just part of the natural cycle of the planet? While fossil fuels do contribute to a higher percentage of CO2 in the atmosphere, there is no proof that they are the main cause of the heating of the earth.

It's because Human Nature is stubborn. People get an idea into their head, such as that global warming is a myth, and they wont leave it. Another way of phrasing it is that Man Kind is ignorant to the truth that is laid out in front of them. Global Warming is only one example of this, but its an example. Somehow people got it into their head that it isn't true, that it cant be true, and they won't give up on that thought no matter what evidence there is. Just like evolution and Christianity.

Because some people still think the ice age is ending and that's why it is getting warmer but there is proof of global warming. Also people are scared that their generation started this and that is going to really mess up the earth if we don't start using less fossil fuels and start finding new ways to save the planet.
