I live in Missouri and I've always wondered what type of bird this is. It's not a "whistle" like a typical bird and almost sounds like it's saying "who." It's kind of hard to describe in words but it sounds like "Whoo oo whoo whoo whoo" It's very peaceful and serene sounding. Anyone have a clue?

The bird most often associated with this type of call is an owl.

Several species of owl make such sounds. Owls usually remain within their territories but a few are migratory, and some, for reasons unknown, just wander. For instance, I was amazed when I walked outside last summer and found a snowy owl on my front porch. It should have been hundreds of miles north.
