New York City is fairly safe, but it is as safe as any other big city, it can be overwhelming the first time you visit, but you'll get the hang of it.
I usually do not take a lot of cash and I do keep my wallet on the front pocket. I also use a money belt when I'm in NYC (I live in New Jersey)
However I do the same go to other big cities in Europe and in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Personally, I never had a problem in New York, but I had a close encounter in Newark. NYC is not what you used to see in the 70's, it is really a nice place to go and have a good time.

It's always better to be safe, even if it sounds like a silly idea.
Whenever I am in a large urban center, I try and be very careful of my surroundings, and who is near me.
Travel Channel has shown video of how easy it is to get pick pocketed, even when you think your safe, so why risk it?
I'd suggest that if you must wear tight pants get a fanny pack, or just keep a small amount of cash,ID,and a credit card in the wallet.
Being safe is the best bet.(and cheaper in the long run)

Back left pocket usually. Sometimes right pocket when my hands are full and can't reach my left. And then I keep my phone (and chapstick when it's winter) in my right front pocket, with the chapstick on bottom, then phone on top. And finally I keep my iPod in my left fron pocket. Yeah, I hate purses and bags even though I'm a girl.

Always carry your wallet in your front pocket in crowded places. I live in NYC and I never heard of anyone getting pickpocketed (except a drunk friend who fell asleep on the train and got hit pocket cut open). NYC in general is very safe.

I wouldn't worry about what pocket your wallet's in, but keep your wits about you. I'd keep it in your back pocket but be aware of your surroundings when you're in the city and you'll be fine. Pickpockets are more likely to steal things out of bags. (If you've got tight jeans on, you'd feel it if someone tried to take your wallet.)

I would put mt wallet in my front pocket in any big city. If you lose your wallet you'll lose more than the price of a pair of bigger pants

I have switched to the money clip/credit card holder many years ago. It keeps my cash and holds about 5-6 credit card type items (credit cards, license, travel cards). It is small fits easy in my front pocket.

No. I lived in New York all my life and I never been mugged . New York has less crime than Detroit, Baltimore, Dc, and New Orleans. I'm so sick and tired of people badmouthing my state.
