i admit tattooing has become quite mainstream these days. along with punk. people don't even know the history of punk and tattoos and such... they just get em cuz the media tells them too. how sad.
i love tattoos. i love it when an individual gets a memorial, uses their OWN ART, or has it customized. i do hate the banner, panther, and butterfly tattoos. they mean nothing and people just want to "be cool"
it's body art. i'm an artist and see beauty in them... well some of them.
as for your friend... is he afraid of tattoos? tell that pansy to suck it up and wear a diaper... THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!

i'm pretty sure that nobody ever claimed that they are better, healthier or smarter just because they have tattoos. and the fact is that 1/4 of the american population has tattoos so that means 3/4 of them DON'T which would mean that you all are more alike than we are. but i have never gotten a tattoo to be an individual or to "express myself" i think that is a crappy reason to get a tattoo.
i love art. i collect different art mediums like canvas, paper, glass, photos and skin art. some people are very excited about tattoos and seeing people with tattoos. GREAT tattoos impress and excite me. but 90% of the tattoos i see are mediocre at best, whatever it's not my skin.
who cares if your employee loves tattoos. what impact does that have on your daily life? do people's tattoos change the way you live or function on a daily basis? ignore them.

Wow, after reading your question and how you framed it, "lotsa folks have them so the individualistic aspect kinda goes down the drain" I don't think there is anything or any way I could reply that would make you comprehend "What is it" Its the magic of the ink, dude, the magic of the ink.................It should, however, draw out all the squeaky little teeny boppers from Tattoo Haters High like a magnet. Let the fun begin..............

This day and age, many people just want to have a tattoo. They don't make you a bad person, or unhealthier, or stupid. I am 23 years old, I have a B.A in special education and I have 10 tattoos. They are all hidden when I wear my business clothes, and when I wear a swim suit or anything like that, they all show, but they are not big and bold, they are just small and girly. To make a long thing short, people just want tattoos, and there is nothing wrong with them. It is not good to overreact over something so silly as a tattoo as long as they are not big skulls and crossbones tattooed across someones forehead.

Some people do use them as a way to make themselves appear "cool". It is used as an individualistic expression for most people, assuming they haven't blatantly stole it. It dates for tribal countries, in which tattoos told a story, the rank, or the type of person it represented. This has been brought along in society, making the experience for many as a way of reminding themselves of a moment, an experience, a mental state, or a memory to savour and carry on their skin.
Ignorance is what you wrote, without even having one. I'd like to think I do not look cheap, unapproachable or even people would know about my piece. It's personable, to those who don't abuse it for fame and glory.

I don't think it's an individualistic thing...at least not for me. it's more of another form of self-expression. Some of my friends have more interesting reasons i.e., memorializing a deceased family member, cultural expression, etc. I guess it will always remain the same - folks who don't have tats will never understand. But I will agree that once you get one, something weird inside of you says "I want another one...and another....and another." Unfortunately, I speak from experience. On my 6th tat now. What I'm looking forward to is seeing all of us when we turn 80 with our wrinkled and saggy tats!

Tattoos are as individual as you make them. Keep in mind, you can put literally ANYTHING into a tattoo. The fact that most peoples' creativity ends at a rose on their lower back is no one's fault but their own.
Tattoo are a way of communicating a message about who you are, or marking important events in your life, or merely seeking to beautify your body.
Tattoos are like anything else. There's one way of going about it which says "I am a sheep," and another way which says "I am an individual." What you choose to say about yourself is no more a reflection on tattooing itself than Ambercrombie is on clothing in general.
And as for your employee... I'd say he needs to grow up a little. He seems a little sheltered.

people don't get tattoos because they think they're cool or badass or trying to be an "individual". when people get tattooed majority of the time it means something to them. all my tattoos mean something to me. they represent a time in my life. i'm proud of mine. when i need a reminder i look at my tattoos. i love them with all my heart.
not having tattoos doesn't make you a better person.

I have some tats and they are not for anyone but myself. Mine are things that just mean so much to me and a point in time that I just sit and remember the very day when I got them.

thats like saying everyone sings, writes poetry and draw, everyones dresses how they like... so it doesnt make them an indivual anymore.
a tattoo is usually to remember a certain time in your life..
like if your mom died you can get a permant shrine to memorialize her forever on your flesh wear the wounds of your life.
its kind of like the saying wear your heart on your sleeve.
if you dont like tattoos its simple just dont get one.
hating on people who have them is predjudiced who cares if the person looks trashy its how they choose to decorate themselves
