At this moment you better get Windows XP because it has not been that long for Vista since it has been launched and still there are too many programs, drivers,.. that are not capable to run on Windows Vista. You can install Vista later after few year. I'm now using Windows XP and I think by the end of 2007, I will install Windows Vista. and I don't really think Vista will run slow on the PC is it design for. maybe it runs slow because you are not using the proper amount of RAM needed or something else!

Vista would probably be slow on computers that were designed to run XP, if you upgraded the computer from XP to Vista. A new machine designed to run Vista, with Vista preloaded, should run well enough. Interestingly, some computer manufacturers have faced pressure from large customers to keep offering machines with XP on them. I'm happy with XP myself, and I've read that Vista has a number of features that are potentially quite annoying. If you have to buy a machine now, then I guess you'll buy one and probably get Vista on it. If you can hold off a bit, until Microsoft has ironed out all the bugs in the software, then you'll be better off in the long run. After using computers for 20 years on a variety of different platforms (e.g. Mac, Windows, Unix), I've learned that being an "early adopter" really means being a guinea pig. As a general rule, if you don't need to buy a new computer or upgrade software, it's better to wait until whatever the next new thing is has all the bugs worked out.

If you remember XP needed 2 services pack to be one of the best products that microsoft had ever release, if you use your computer for daily work vista will do the work but it requires a lot of resources from your computer (at least 1GB of RAM with 2 GB will work flawless), is really hard to get cracked softwares to vista but in the future hackers will find a way to do it. If you don't care to wait for vista services pack i said go for vista.

hold of on buying a new computer for a year if u want vista because a lot of software is incompatible. If you buy the pc with vista you wont have any driver problems and it wont be slow at all
Provided your computer is up to date, you will find that VISTA IS NOT AT ALL SLOW
good luck

Simply put, a few years later MS will be stopping support for XP. Well?
Oh yeah, Vista's Aero totally rocks.

i would say XP. you wonder why? well because Vista has too many bugz (erros, issues, etc)
second: many softwares (programs) aren't compatibles yet.
third: you need to upgrade you computer: such as more memory ram, brand new video card, new motherboard,
unless you get a new computer, but my advice is:
you should wait at least 6 months or a year while they fix all those bugs

Vista has a nicer look but it requires more RAM and processor speed to run smoothly.

Vista isn't cool but it is slow. Even basic things like copying a file will have you tearing your hair out... until they fix that bug once and for all.
Get an Apple running Mac OS X over anything from Microsoft. You'll get all the cool features, but without the bugs, slowdowns, viruses, adware, spyware, registry problems and constant "defrags".
Or maybe a nice Dell running Ubuntu.

If you really enjoy feeding Bill Gates money, then at least do yourself the favour of getting XP.

It's a matter of taste, but I rather stick with XP until all the kinks are worked out.
... like LinuxOS said, you can always use Ubuntu.
