Make sure that it's something that you will not miss. I work at a vet's office and we board animals. We do put their stuff in, but if they chew it up or mess on it, we'll take it out and wash it. Depending on the item, we may put it back. If they're chewing a bed up and they are eating it, we won't give it back so that the animals doesn't get obstructed. But a shirt or towel or toys are a good idea.

does your vet have runs or will the dog be in a cage? Have you seen where the dog will stay?

Yes, this is always a good way to keep your dog happy and calm in a noisy environment such as a kennel. Also try to bring something for your dog to do; chew bones, treats, and toys are good ways to keep your dog busy while you are gone.
