I have a springer spaniel and he is over 70 pounds. We walk him every day and play with him too, but he just keeps gaining more weight. any advice?

You might want to take him to the vet for a check-up first to make sure he hasn't got any physical problems like hypothyroidism.

Once he gets a clean bill of health, you need to cut back on his dog food, don't give him any treats and especially no people food. And you need to walk him, several short walks a day because you need to build up his endurance just like a person would. A springer would likely enjoy swimming too - if you have anywhere you can let him go swimming, try that.

As he gets back into shape, walk him longer (but not in the heat of the day) and faster, jog a bit, play ball or frisbee so he gets in some running.

He didn't get into this terrible shape overnight, it's going to take some time to get the weight off him, but it'll be worth it because he'll live so much longer and enjoy his life!

Keep walking and playing with him, but integrate a little running (sprints) if you don't already do so. You can also switch your dog to a weight control dog food (most major brands have them). There's also a weight loss drug called "Slentrol" that can be obtained from a Vet.

Read your ingredient list on your bag of dog food. Does it include corn gluten and a list of ingredients that you have no clue what they are? If so, you need to switch dog foods. Try finding one that has the highest level of protein (named protein not just "crude protein") and buy it. Make sure it is a "less active" formula or "weight control" and also read the feeding instructions. Dogs shouldn't be allowed to free-feed, which is eat and eat all day long. It isn't good for them and then they tend to overeat (like humans) and get fat. The instructions probably say feed 2 cups per day. Measure out 2 cups and feed it to him once a day.

That is the best advice anyone can give.

Good luck.

put your dog on a diet formula food or just plain cut back his food. Most dog foods feeding charts suggest feeding much more than your dog really needs. For instance according to the chart on my dogs food they should get 8-10 cups of food per day they are actually fed 4 cups and are in perfect condition. If this has no effect take him to your vet for testing.

has he had a complete evaluation by your vet? a blood panal to see if there is a medical cause

Use baby carrots & apple slices for treats.

Stop overfeeding him & if you are feeding him food from the grocery store - STOP. if your food has corn in it - that packs weight on him. either get him on a holistic food or start cooking for him

Check the guidlines on the bag for the correct amt to feed for the weight he SHOULD be & divide that into 2 meals a day. You can add fresh green beans to offer bulk with no calories.

Or you can try one of the diet foods made for dogs.

Walk it regularly but not too much, don't overfeed it, make sure it's eating the right kinds of things, not just dog biscuits.

Control food intake - feed him twice a day and don't leave food out otherwise. Also, no table food!
