Do you believe it consists of going subgingival, even in localized 5mm pockets? I need a website that states either. I'm a new graduate of dental hygiene and I believe that a prophy can include going subging. to get the pt clean w/o doing SRP. That's what I was taught, but I can't seem to find it in writing.

Hi. I agree with you.
I don't think that localized 5mm pockets are a reason to diagnose SRP. For a couple of reasons.
First, there can be a 1mm discrepency depending on how you angle the probe. So, would you SRP 4mm pockets? No.
Second, just because there are 5mm pockets doesn't mean perio. They could be pseudopockets.
Also, I think you end up going slightly sub on ANY prophy. It's just part of the game...
Just my opinion. Not sure you'll find it in writing...

I've never heard of doing a prophy without going subgingival! Doing only supra is a disservice to our patients who will eventually end up with pockets greater than 5mm if we're not doing 6MRC subg prophys! Good luck in the search for getting it in writing!

HELLO,
THIS COMES FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. GOING SUBGINGIVAL W/O DOING THE SCLALING ASPECT IS AN UNWRITTEN PRACTICE IN A DENTAL PROPHYLAXIS.
