I am apalled at some of the answers given to you. You are asking for help here. Not everyone is an experienced dog owner and, as you say, it's the first time you have owned a female dog.
Your little girl's season will last for 21 days and she will bleed quite a bit for about the first week then it gradually starts to ease off.
She will keep herself pretty clean by licking. Don't discourage this, or put diapers on her, it is perfectly natural for her to do this and if you put diapers on her she will not be able to keep herself clean. Try and keep her in the kitchen if you can and just mop up the spots of blood as they appear.
My bitches usually clean up after themselves anyway. This is perfectly normal.
Dogs cope very well with their seasons. She may feel a little uncomfortable for the first day or two but then they just act normally.
If you don't intend to breed from her in the future it might be advisable to have her spayed. This has to be done three months after her season. It saves a lot of worry on your part.
Just keep an eye on her and make sure she is kept on a lead all the time she is on heat. An anti-mate spray is a good thing to buy as it helps to keep off any male dogs in the neighbourhood from visiting.
Good luck. I wish you well.

you can get Dag diapers at a pet shop if she will keep them On.
The heat ( not period) will last 3 weeks call the vets now and set up an appointment in 3 1/2 weeks to get her spayed. if she is that hairy you may want to trim her hair in the back end to keep her cleaner.
Watch her and take her for walks to be good. A male cane breed through a fence and the male can smell a female up to 5 miles away so you may find a lot of male visitors. Do keep an eye on her.
On the average with a heat they bleed for 1 week then they gt clear ( this is usual time they can be bred) and then another week of bleeding.
They don't get cramps like people they just lick themselves a lot to keep themselves clean.
Good Luck.

You can buy boys underwear and put them on her backwards so her tail can go through the opening. Then put a panty shield in the underwear so she can be inside without bleeding in your house. Take them off when she goes outside. Be careful when you let her out - the boy dogs will find her very interesting... It's best to have her sleep in a crate or locked in a tiled room at night with the pants off so she can air out. She'll lick and keep herself clean that way too. No pain, but she might be a little more tired. If you aren't breeding, you really should get her spayed a couple of months after she is done with her period - when her hormones are back to normal.

You can get a doggie diaper at PetSmart or your local petstore. She will be in heat 2-3 times a year and it will last about 3 weeks. You could consider shaving her belly area to make it easier to wipe clean. She should not be in any pain.
Please, please get her spayed as soon as possible. There are many good reasons to do this! Spaying her will prevent unwanted puppies, keep unneutered male dogs away from your house and yard, and eliminate the chance that she will develop several different kinds of cancer. Believe me, there are more than enough homeless puppies to go around. Check with your local humane society or vet - most areas have low-cost spay and neuter programs.

yes, get her spayed. There are lots of health reasons to do this.... it is less painful, less messy, reduces the chance of cancer, etc. Plus, if you're not a professional breeder, which you dont' sound like, then you really shouldn't have a reason to breed your dog, therefore, her menstral cycle is really not necessary...
look up your local humane society/ SPCA, they usually offer free or low-cost spay and neuter services... it would cost $100 at the MOST, at the least, it would be around $40... And this would be sooo much better for your little girl!!!

The first thing you need to do is secure her in a safe place if you don't want any unwanted puppies because any and all male dogs will be after her and just putting her behind a chain link fence won't cut it. As far as i know, they don't cramp like we do. You can also pick up a "diaper" from petsmart, petco, etc. to prevent her from staining your carpets and your furniture. After it's over take her to the vet and get her spayed.

Go to Petsmart and get a doggie diaper or else she's going to bleed all over everything for 3 weeks. She feels fine but she's going to have the urge to lick....disgusting. Get her the doggie panties.
Next, call your vet and schedule an appointment to have her spayed.

get her always with wings. lol As far as i know, not that muchpain, just be careful with the mess. And be careful male dogs who will smell her a mile away. If you were planning on getting her neutered, when she is done with her cycle would be the best time. Shave the hairy area if you are going to do manual cleaning. It will make it easier.

You probably need to take her to a vet They will tell you all about her. Try petsmart. Also you can buy different magazines specialized for cocker spaniels. It tells you how to take care of that type of dog.
