Have a vet or groomer take care of it. It's anal glands and you don't want to do it yourself.

this annoying habit can come from a couple different sources. One is some kinds of worms/parasites in the dogs system. The other is his anal glands may need to be expressed.Dogs have glands by thier anus which is thier signature scent. Sometimes they get blocked up the dog tries to express them by dragging his but.Ufortunately this is not pleasant for us humans.Your vet can determine what the cause is and give meds or express the glands also some groomers offer gland expressing. If your dogs problem is the glands it will be much cheaper to have a groomer express the glands as part of the dogs regular grooming.

Okay there are a couple reasons your dog might do this. First check and make sure it has nothing in its fur around the anus area. Once that is ruled out you want to check for worms. You can either take it to the vet or you can check it fecal matter over a couple days to see if worms are in the fecal matter. Sometimes worms wont come out but there will be a reddish colored mucus in the poop. As there are so many different types of worms out there I suggest a visit to your vet to find out what kind of worm if this is a possibility. Most are fairly easy to rid the dog of but some are deadly if left to long. I just lost four out of a litter of twelve pups because we were using the wrong kind of wormer for the kind of worms they had. Its not usually overly expensive and if several days of treatment are required its easy to administer by yourself. I would not in any circumstances consider buying the wormer from say walmart or a pet store they are generic wormers and usually only treat tape worms and not very good at that. Stongid T is one of the best wormers, for puppies due to it is a one time wormer. Good luck with your dog.

It is probably the anal glands if it is a small dog. Larger dogs do not have as much problems. You can take it to a vet. or a groomer and have them expressed. If you want to save the money and want to try it yourself here is a site that will help:

He's doing it either because he has plugged anal glands, but you'd likely smell that, or because he has worms. The way to stop him is to take him and a stool sample to the vet so you can get the meds you need to help this poor dog!

Your dog probably has 'worms' and the 'dragging' is from the 'itching' in his bum that the worms cause. Take him to the vet ASAP and get him 'wormed' properly (there are many different kinds, and only a vet should 'prescribe' the medication to treat the worms and get rid of them.

It could be worms, but more likely he has an impacted anal gland. (My dog gets that all the time) If you take him to the vet, they can clean it out for you and it should stop him from doing that. I have to take my dog every couple of months.

I had the same problem with my dog. When i took her to the vet, he said it was because her anal glands were full. He took care of it though, and she hasn't done it since. So if you take him/her to the vet they should be able to fix the problem. Hope this helps!

Likely it's his anal glands. Watch the vet tech empty them once or twice, then try it (make sure they help you the first time).
It's gross, but $8-10 a session can add up.

two most common reasons are full anal sacks or parasites. Your vet can easily provide relief for both.
