If it's through marriage or divorce it's free. Other than that,the laws vary by state. Some states allow you to change it by simply starting to use the name you want to,no legalities involved but social security may give you a hassle.

If there were an easy way 2 do it I would've done it, believe me! u go to the social security office with the original document of ur marriage license. u get ur new last name in the mail in about 4 wks. Congratulations by the way!

You go to your local social security office, and if you're changing it due to marriage or divorce it's free. I don't know about changing it arbitrarily. You probably need a court order, which means explaining to someone why you want to change your name. So if it's just because, you probably won't get one.
