Here is the thing with Beepers smoking pot... While pot is not, in itself, addictive, the feeling that a beeper gets is different from the feeling that a normal person gets when they smoke it. It may make you feel like you are better able to function, esp when manic, when it is really making the mood worse and making it last longer. I believe you when you say that you can't stop... because you are addicted to the way it makes you feel... I am bipolar, and I have smoked pot... In fact, I smoked alot of pot for about 6 months, maybe more... I was manic, with occasional dips into depression the entire time I smoked weed. This was because the pot was keeping me manic... while I felt that it was evening out the moods, and making me feel less hyper, it was really just making it worse and worse, keeping me from a normal mood. If I had been depressed, it would have just kept me in a depression... Imagine it this way... you smoke a joint... it is kindof like smoking that joint hits a pause button on your mood... not your life, just your mood. as soon as you aren't high anymore, you go right back to the mood you were already in... the longer you smoke it, the longer you put off cycling back into a normal mood... and when you get depressed while you are smoking, you get really depressed... like, first thing you want to do is kill yourself. smoking again may make it go away for a while, but when you aren't high anymore, you are right back there, in fact, probably even lower than before... I am telling you this both from experience and also from what my doctor has told me. See, I had a discussion with my doc on why they don't legalize pot as a treatment for bipolar... after he told me it was like pushing pause on your mood, I recognized my mood patern when I smoked for what it was. if you need to get help to stop smoking it, then get help... there are lots of way to stop... I wont tell you that you won't want to, that you won't yearn to smoke it, but that you can stop, and you should. I love smoking pot, I wish I could smoke it everyday; but for my bipolar to be anything near controlled, I cannot. So I stay away from it. I don't hang around people who do it either, because as soon as they mention it, I am all for it... If you have to, move. Just do it for yourself... because you will never be able to control your bp at all if you don't stop. now that that's done... send me your left overs, ok? no, jk... good luck... try to be strong... you will need to be.

Don't listen to these naysayers. They sound like mouthpieces for the Right Wing. Just because someone is an R.N. doesn't mean they know what they're talking about. It just means they were able to regurgitate the info their instructors taught them. My daughter is an R.N., and though I love her very much, I don't think she's at all competent as a health care provider. My personal experience is that cannabis CAN relieve a wide variety of symptoms. I, too, suffer from bi-polar disorder, and AIDS. Sometimes (most of the time, actually) cannabis can offer a great deal of relief. It can also cause real problems for some people, just like certain antibiotics can cause major problems for me, but not for the next guy. Bottom line is, if it helps you, and you can regulate your use of it, go for it. If not, consult your doctor or a trusted friend.

I'm also bi-polar and I used to smoke weed constantly as well. Personally, I think that I liked it because it numbed out all of the crazy emotions that we go through with this mental illness. The problem is that it can mess with your medication and it can also make your symptoms worse.
Since you're bi-polar you need to be very aware of your emotions so you can tell when you're becoming manic or depressed. Weed hinders your ability to keep it under control. It may also be easier for you to get addicted to other drugs that are much more dangerous.

I'm bipolar and I don't want to stop smoking marijuana. It really seems to help and smoothe out life's ups and downs...you know what I mean. Personally, I found it to work better than lithium or depakote. But then again, I'm not a doctor.

Your self medicating, Depends on how much you smoke, You may get a really sever case of paranoia. Not easy to deal with. Other then that I expect you feel it mellows out the highs . It not the best idea in the world but I do know that it's a hard habit to quite. You might want to check the internet to see how it mixes with meds you might be prescribed for the Bi-polor. Some time they counter act one another. I'm not going to tell you to quit, That is up to you. Only you can change it, if you want to.

Hmm, it will make you mellow, but you will become more and more dependent on smoking. Before you know it you won't be able to function without a hit or two, just one more hit you'll start to say. Pretty soon you'll forgo buying the simplest items, such as milk or bread just to get a good high. You'll forget meetings, miss appointments, and stop having as much fun as you used to. After that, you'll probably lose interest in most of the things that used to make you happy. Who knows, maybe your cravings will make you desperate to the point that maybe you'll start "borrowing" money from friends and family, with intention of paying it back, of course, but every time you have extra cash you'll think "Man, I could buy an ounce. It will last me awhile. Then I'll quit". Now I may be way off, but I've seen this happen many times. It is your life, your decision, but think about what it is you really want.

I think it's more of a mental BLOCK than anything. Just get passed the fact that some professional said something was up with you, and understand that everyone's got something wrong with them, including myself.
Just learn to kick hte habit, because it's not good for you, or anyone else. You're going to end up in jail, and have probably dragged along some friends with you. YOu should really consider quitting before you give up on it.
Good luck, you'll be a good role model to many.

Bi-polar disorder goes hand in had with taking risks whether they may harm you or not. It's easier for people diagnosed with bi-polar to get addicted to drugs and unprotected sex, and promiscuous lifestyles. Here is a great website I found skip the black print and go to the blue print, it's a story about a man who is now in his forty's that used cannabis as his only way to get away from his disorder. http://www.rxmarihuana.com/bipolar.htm
Here is another article that is very interesting:

Its definately going to effect your bi-polar condition in a negative way. Marijuana may make you feel good and lead you into believing that it is helping you when in fact you are getting worse. It will increase your depression and lead to more and worse mood swings. Stop doing it ASAP, my brother went through the same exact thing.

Not can't. Won't. At least be honest. It's going to screw up your short term memory in a major way. You know perfectly well there are better medications for your condition than this.
