302 vs 351

why is it that the most expensive 302 has more horsepower than the most expensive 351?

302=450hp 351=430hp

so which is a better engine for a 69 mustang?

It depends on what you're after.

If you're after early torque and end horsepower, then you want bigger displacement. That's the "Dodge Viper" school of performance... V12 engine and all that.

If you're after high-revving RPM and a lot of mid-range grunt, then you'll want the higher revving engine. That's a bit more of the European school of performance. Ferrari engines are only like 5L or so but still makes 500+ horsepower by revving higher and higher compression.

There is no such thing as one best for all situations.

Why more power, cause the 302 can turn more rpm reliably. For sake of modifications use the 302 much easier fit. 351 is wider and exhaust can be an issue around the steering if your using headers. Also cooling system needs more air flow and its easier to keep the 302 cool. The 351 uses large crank bearings and that means you need to keep rpm down or you run into bearing speed problems and causes failures. It can run about 6800 reliably and the 302 can go up to about 8000 without any problems.

Or you can go with the 427 and get real power, but at a cost. modifications needed, Suspension and mounts and different transmission. or atleast bellhousing.
