I asked this question so that I could get "both sides" of the coin on this one. I always try to do that when a particular issue comes up and I am torn on this whole ILLEGAL immigration thing, but I am leaning towards "Jobs American's won't do for a "Slave Wage."
My gut reaction when I hear the phrase, "Jobs American's won't do" I feel my stomach turrs. That' s always my GUT reaction to that comment. It's like the arguments they used for not raising min. wage. Oh, it'll hurt the "small businesses." Do they think we fall for that? No, it's what BIG BUSINESSES want. They don't give a flying flip about small businesses.
Anyway, thanks for the answers and I am still interested in hearing point of views from the flip side. Valid points tend to sway me...
I am just tired of hearing this phrase and tired of having it "glossed over" as if it is a valid one.

Cabron, because this topic is about immigration? Don't presume to know how I feel about those other issues because you don't.

David M, I need something to go on other than "one persons experience." Meaning, there has not been any evidence or studies done that showed that American's won't do those jobs AT REASONABLE - LIVABLE - WAGE. Your argument doesn't cover that part of MY argument.

Americans can not afford to work for the wage that most illegals do. Americans have personal property tax, education expenses, health insurance expenses, auto insurance, federal taxes, state taxes, local taxes and the list goes on. The illegal alien does not have most of those expenses therefore can work for a much lower wage and live much much cheaper than a citizen.
Jobs Americans wont do for slave wage. Great question...

just another example of the way a C student proclaims knowledge of a subject. No offense to C students but....... I have seen an infiltration into many job markets by illegal mexican immigrants. Don't try to tell me that there are no American carpenters! Homebuilding and apartment maintenance are two areas that mexican illegals have taken over because they will work cheaper, but in the process have lowered the quality of the product. Who used to build Americas highways? Who used to build Americas new homes? Hey Georgie, America knows your an idiot. Everyone in the world tells him he's wrong, so, he does what he wants anyway. Gee what a great president, NOT!

Glitter....sorry to say, but I have picked grapes from vineyards and tied vines, I have picked chilies, I have worked in packing houses, I have worked in fast-foods, I have worked in groups homes. These were repetitious jobs in my summer years in the past. You have it all wrong Glitter, you just need to grow up and smell the fresh roses!
You think Americans won't do such jobs, but that's not true. I am living proof and so are my parents. I really think that majority of illegals take up jobs like that because they want fast money and can't supply the right documents for a good paying job, because it does take time to get all legal documents like a social security card and I.D. It takes too long, some even get paid 'under the table' they call it, which means they get paid with cash. I think that employers who hire illegals should all be arrested along with the illegals.
Poor glitter just has a one set mind.

If a job needs to be done and the public doesn't like the wage, nobody will want to do it. Eventually this will force the employer to raise the wage to attract interest in the job. The market determines a fair wage.

I grew up on a farm, I picked crops and shoveled manure. I can tell you for a fact that there are many Americans who do not see any job as beneath them.
There are some business people who really want illegal immigrants as workers as they have no protection by law and no social security or other fees. These people have turned Americans away and then hire illegal immigrants. I have seen them work they do not work harder it is just cheaper to hire them.

I love this question! It comes up almost daily here on Yahoo.
Let's see I'm sure there will be jobs like:
yard work, nannies, maids, construction workers, field workers, hmmm there are so many skilled jobs they do!
Americans CAN do all those jobs. But we are smart enough to know we need more money to do those jobs. The PROBLEM is that illegals come to this country and will work for wages below minimum wage, so Americans can't do those jobs and make enough money to support their AMERICAN family.

I lived in California for 8 years and not once did I ever see one American in the strawberry fields. Not once did I ever see or hear of anyone who was unemployed mention they were going to try to get work picking fruits or vegetables in the hot sun. Yet these fields were full of immigrants who were happy to be doing anything that did not involve starving. Jobs American's won't do? There are plenty more. How about cleaning houses and washing other peoples dirty dishes. The list only starts there.

Well, there are jobs that Americans won't do....
This spring and summer, Colorado is having to use convict labor from neighboring Nevada and other states to plant, tend and pick the crops this year. Not enough workers.
If any of our 4%+ unemployed were interested, there is plenty of work right there.
Americans aren't interested in doing stoop labor in the fields, cleaning hotels and office buildings, washing dishes, laboring with a landscaper. Americans feel entitled to a much higher position with much highers wages - even though many have no high school diploma, no education, no skills and would rather sit on their butts and play video games anyway - and let the taxpayers support them.
