Certain foods, supplements, and medications can turn stools black. These include:
bismuth (e.g. Pepto bismol) this does not apply to regular antacids like tums or maalox, etc.
iron
activated charcoal
aspirin and NSAIDS (which can cause bleeding in the stomach)
dark foods such as black licorice and blueberries
Dark stools can also occur during constipation.
Blood from the upper part of the digestive tract, such as the stomach, will look dark by the time it reaches exits the body as a bowel movement. Blood that is bright or dark red, on the other hand, is more likely to come from the large intestine or rectum.

Pepto Bismol turn poop and your tounge black. This could be why, or he could have intestinal problems, as an unhealthy entestine can cuse poop to be black. But I would definately say he may have stomac h problams and is taking pepto bismol regularely. Hope this helps!

It's probably nothing, but if I were you I would get it checked out with the doctor just in case. It could potentially indicate blood in the stool (perhaps caused by ulcers or other serious problems)

Black tar looking stools sound like old blood in the stool. or it could be something you ate, or took. If it doesn't go away soon go to the ER or call a doctor.

So many possibilities--colon cancer, certain ingredients in some forms of laxatives, beets, iron etc.Fiber would not do it .After eliminating some of the above; if you still have tarry stool, then talk to your doctor pronto.

Oatmeal shouldn't cause that. Are you taking iron supplements? That can cause it, otherwise you should have a check up with your doctor.
