Well if those were the only two i could choose from Id pick the M-16, not the RUSSIAN AK-47. Everyone trains with the M-16 but its being phased out for different weapons based on need. If available id take the advance combat rifle. Almost never jams because of caseless ammo, and is designed to be the best weapon on the planet, its kick ***. Though it does cost several thousand dollars apiece so its mainly given to special forces, but that said the military has ordered several hundred thousand of them.

The Chinese AK-47 (type 81 assault rifle) has been given by the Americans to Afghan guerillas, so I think that this weapon being used and manufactured over many different countries ie: Albania, Bulgaria, Finland, China, Germany, Egypt, Hungary, etc.
It would be better to take a weapon that could utilize enemy ammunition, and also parts, if needed for repair. Strategically, the AK is better.

The AK-47. I am pretty sure the AK-47 is more powerful than the M-16.

Chinese AK-47. Last I heard, the AK-47 originated from a guy named Kalashnikov. With that said, the AK-47 is extremely durable and evokes memories of Rambo.

I'd choose the AK-47 because I trust its capabilities. It is generally accurate enough, has fantastic reliability and brilliant stopping power.
If given the option of any weapon I would stick with the L85a2 (SA80a2). I've used it in desert and temperate climates and the a2 version is hugely reliable and accurate. I've also used the a1 which was rubbish! Although heavier than the M-16, it has good balance to patrol with and shoot easily. In addition to this the Susat is a great optic.

I'll take whatever we have plenty of ammo for, which rounds out the use of the weapon !

Incidentally, AK-47's have been manufactured by most East European country's, I doubt that the Chinese version has a leg up on many of the others !

One of the Mens Magazines (maxim or stuff) actually did a comparision of the M16A2 and the AK47. I agree with some of the points they made. The M16 round is .223 which is slightly bigger then a .22 compared to a 7.62 AK round which is about twice as big. The AK47 is also, cheaper, easier to take apart, and is more reliable after it has gotten a little dirty. The M16A2 does have its pluses though. It is way more acurate since it has ajustable windage which the AK47 does not have. Since more rebels use the AK47 it would be easier to find replacement parts and ammo if needed.
