Agreed. There is nothing as refreshing as using reason and your own brain. I never could understand why theists are content to turn their brains off and be spoon-fed antiquated fairytales, without asking questions. Being skeptical, always questioning, is a good thing. Recommend subscribing to the Skeptical Inquirer. Their focus isn't necessarily on religion (although their most recent issue is), but on all the other paranormal junk people fill their brains with.

Reason is God's crowning gift to man.
— Sophocles

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.
— Galileo Galilei

Being unable to reason is not a positive character trait outside religion.
— Dewey Henize

I find every sect, as far as reason will help them, make use of it gladly; and where it fails them, they cry out, it is a matter of faith, and above reason.
— John Locke (1632-1704) - (FYI also where the character on Lost got his name)

Truth does not demand belief. Scientists do not join hands every Sunday, singing, "Yes, gravity is real! I will have faith! I will be strong! I believe in my heart that what goes up, up, up must come down, down, down. Amen!" If they did, we would think they were pretty insecure about it.
— Dan Barker

The whole foundation of Christianity is based on the idea that intellectualism is the work of the Devil. Remember the apple on the tree? Okay, it was the Tree of Knowledge. "You eat this apple, you're going to be as smart as God. We can't have that"
— Frank Zappa

(If this was the only way they could understand the difference between good and evil, how could they have known it was wrong to disobey god and eat the fruit?)

So far as I can remember, there is not one word in the Gospels in praise of intelligence.
— Bertrand Russell

I’ve never understood how God could expect his creatures to pick the one true religion by faith – it strikes me as a sloppy way to run a universe.
— Robert A. Heinlein

Faith is a cop-out. It is intellectual bankruptcy. If the only way you can accept an assertion is by faith, then you are conceding that it can't be taken on its own merits.
— Dan Barker

Faith is believing what you know ain't so.
— Thomas A. Edison (1847 - 1931)

Oh, what tangled webs we weave when first we practice to believe!
— Laurence Peter

Faith is to the Christian what sand is to the ostrich.
— Anonymous

To explain the unknown by the known is a logical procedure; to explain the known by the unknown is a form of lunacy.
— David Brooks

Orthodoxy: That peculiar condition where the patient can neither eliminate an old idea nor absorb a new one.
— Elbert Hubbard

Fundamentalism means never having to say 'I'm wrong.'
— Unknown

All our knowledge brings us nearer to our ignorance,
All our ignorance brings us nearer to death,
But nearness to death no nearer to God.
— T.S. Eliot

The believer is happy; the doubter is wise.
— Hungarian proverb

The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. The happiness of credulity is a cheap and dangerous quality.
— George Bernard Shaw

I don't think that atheism itself is. I believe that at its best, atheism is a good sign of critical thinking. Given that, I would say that atheism is the result of, rather than the cause of, bullshit detection in people.
