The best way to tour DC is to stay in a hotel in the suburbs, Maryland or Virginia, but near a METRO subway line. Then take the subway downtown. Parking in DC is very expensive when you can find it. Hotels in DC are also more expensive than the suburbs. The subway line that is best for this is the ORANGE and BLUE line. It has stops right on the US Mall where all of the Smithsonian museums are located. Since I lived in Maryland I know hotels there better. But try using the hotel web sites like Hampton Inn, Marriott, or Holiday Inn and check to see if they are located near a Metro stop or offer free shuttle service to the Metro.

I suggest staying at the Marriott Courtyard in New Carrollton, Md. Its actually walking distance from the New Carrollton Metro station which is on the Orange line (Its the last stop on that line). Another good location is Silver Springs, Md on Colesville Rd. It is walking distance from the Metro Red line

The metro map is below

To help you on the Virginia side, the best areas to look are Rosslyn, Ballston, and Crystal City/Pentagon City. All the major hotel chains have locations in at least two of those places. Some of the less expensive include the Comfort Inn in Ballston, the Holiday Inn and Radisson, and Hotel Americana in Crystal City. There is also a Courtyard across the street from the Dunn Loring Metro Station.

One advantage to Virginia is that the downtown metro stations are very soon. Metroing from MD can take a lot longer. (though it is a ways from Dunn Loring, as long as New Carrollton.)

enormously intelligent thought to no longer attempt and force in Washington. site visitors is horrendous, that's no longer ordinary to park (till you pay a ludicrous quantity) and you gets everywhere you should pass on the Metro. the only hotel i'm conscious of it truly is interior of walking distance of Union Station is a Hyatt Regency, this is a effective hotel (a minimum of it appears that evidently to be from the exterior - that's a considerable Hyatt and that i'm optimistic that's secure). although I doubt that's much less high priced. I agree that staying in Crystal city is a robust thought. that's a very short Metro experience from Union Station or maybe closer to downtown and each and all of the vacationer issues. There are a minimum of a dozen lodges interior of a pair of blocks of the Crystal city Metro, consisting of a Courtyard Marriott (the place i've got stayed dozens of situations on employer). that's have been given no character, although that's totally secure (everywhere in Crystal city is secure), present day, delicate and has a pool. So that's suitable once you're making plans on doing vacationer stuff all day besides. there are various different lodges interior the same funds, this is a few million/2 the value of a few places good downtown, and you're actually like 3 or 4 Metro stops from downtown. i've got no longer accomplished between the day excursions of Washington even however I grew up there, so have seen each and every thing - museums, monuments, memorials, etc. i won't be in a position to propose for or against any of them, however the income of Washington is, it is so compact which you will locate each and every thing on the Metro and/or walking fairly certainly.

I'd recommend the Days Inn in the 4400 block of Connecticut Avenue NW. Rates there are close to what you would pay to stay in Virginia but you'd be in the city, less than a 4-block walk to the Metro (red line); no hotel-metro shuttles to hassle with. Plus they offer free parking onsite which is rare in DC hotels. This is a very nice neighborhood, quiet and safe; there are several casual-dining choices within walking distance of the hotel, or take the Metro a few stops north to Friendship Heights, or south to Woodley Park or further south to DuPont Circle for more dining and shopping choices than you will know what to do with. Plus it is a pretty decent hotel.
