The EGG! You can't have a chicken without an egg. But I know what you're going to ask, where'd the egg come from? That I don't know... God probably.

The egg. A bird that was not a chicken laid an egg with mutations that combined to take the step from not-a-chicken to chicken. More practically, birds that were not quite what people wanted in a chicken were bred together and produced eggs that made chickens.

I shouldn't go here but...A chicken and an egg are laying in bed together, the chicken is smoking, rolls over, looks at the egg and says "I guess that answers that question."

The egg
Chickens are fairly recent members of the planet while dinosaurs laid eggs millions of years ago. Evolution gradually brought the chicken from egg laying ancestors
