The US made the mistake of lumping all communists into one basket, and policy tended to be to support anything anti-communist. A lot of people who shouldn't have been supported by the US noted that quirk, and so would just make anti-communist noises to get unwarranted support from the US.In defence of the State Department, though, it's hard to tell whom to support among a group of unknowns, and which will turn out to be more or less as expected.

Urkka, not all latin american relations were strained. We supported the government of El Salvador against their rebels. Venezuela (then) was a strong ally. Costa Rica was on friendly terms. Fact is most of latin america was allied with us.
Sure, Nicarauga and Cuba were anti-American, but then again they were allied with the Soviet Union during the cold war. Other countries were distant allies.

The strain in Latin American relations was in our media and our political parties, and the same side that says we should ditch our allies now was saying it then.

Sure, Latin America became a proxy battleground durring the Cold War. Communists fomented revolution there, the US reflexively opposed it, even if the only opposition available was a fascist dictator.
