Hurting the governmental body no. Hurting the process yes. All people are supposed to be created equal but yet the ultra-religious are again fighting against reform like they did during the 60's and the black right to vote. The religious step in and block most forward thinking and thought by attempting to impose their views on other people.
Then there is the one atheist who sued the school board in an attempt to have under god removed from the pledge and such and ended up costing the tax payers in the school district hundreds of dollars and accomplished nothing.

In general, the Christians hurt things, while the atheists help.
The Christians hurt *everyone* when they push creationism.
Atheists help by taking on constitutional causes, like pointing out when the government favors a religious group (thereby marginalizing all others plus those with no religion).

The government hurts itself. It doesn't really need assistance from Christians or Atheists to do that.

It depends on if the atheist or christian is at a government job on R&S debating rather than doing what he or she is supposed to do.

The debate brings all the thoughts and ideas to the "table" for review by all, including our government. For this reason, it would help.
