An electric is quiet without an amplifier. You have to push down fairly hard or else the sound will be dull, and the strings will buzz on the frets.

It takes alot of practice to get the finger strength and accuracy. But you will be able to hear when you are doing it right. I play my electric without an amp about 90% of the time and I enjoy it just fine.

Choose a chord. Put ur fingers where the chord window indicates. Play the chord. Push down on the strings till they sound clear. Any string that is not sounding clear even if it is not fingered could be being muffled by another finger. Any stgring that is fingered but not sounding clear, push the finger down harder. If it still isn't clear, check that ur finger is in the right place - in the fret box not on the fret. If u are a total beginner, it will hurt. Hope this helps.

You are definitely supposed to push down. Push down hard enough so that the string rings out clearly.
