Grapefruits are not people.
Become an artist first - draw, paint, sketch, model, whatever. Build up a portfolio, minimally take some art classes - do an art minor or major more ideally (or an MFA if that's your thing).
Then, or perhaps during, find a shop to apprentice at. Anything else and you're asking for a world of trouble from so many angles. The legal hassles alone are just not worth it.

Honestly, the best thing that you can do is to become an apprentice for a REAL tattoo artist. Learn now to use the tattoo machine (it's not called a tat gun). Another factor that you should also keep in mind is this...if you are considering going into a career tattooing individuals in a legitimate studio as a legitimate artist, you should NOT take the scratcher approach....studios will not take this "experience" that you have seriously and will actually stay away from taking you on as an apprentice.
Please do not do try to build your own tattoo machine and become a scratcher...it's unsafe, your tattos will look bad and it's NOT a good way to start trying to tattoo.

First of all this is for BabyGirl. What kind of an ignoramus are you! We're actually trying to use yahoo answers to educate people about the dangers of amateur tattoos, and to show the public that tattoo are a legitamate artform and you give this punk instructions on how to make a tattoo "gun"!!! Maybe you should go to the pregnancy section and tell them how to give coathanger abortions.
As for you jam.....
1) I don't care if you can draw like Leonard Di Vinci tattooing skin is NOT the same as drawing on paper or tattooing grapefruits. Your VICTIMS are going to get crappy ink
2) You have no idea how to maintain a sterile field. And NO, putting on gloves before you tattoo some one is NOT maintaining a sterile field.
3) There is no way you can sterilize the equipment itself without an autoclave. And NO, rubbing alcohol on it does NOT sterilize the equipment.
4) As far as I know, you have no way of disposing of the bio hazardous wastes that are generated when you give someone a tattoo.
At best you are going to give people crappy tattoos. At worse someone is going to get an infection and end up having a body part amputated or dying and you are going to end up in prison.
Do all of us a favor. If you want to learn the art of tattooing then apply for an apprenticeship and learn from a professional.

ITS NOT A GUN PARTNER!!!!! Honestly, nothing good can come from this. The only thing you'll learn are bad habits and flawed techniques that you'll have to unlearn before you can ever be a real tattoo artist. You want to be a tattoo artist....great! Focus on your art skills. If you can't draw it you'll never be able to tattoo it. Beyond that I'll pass on something a friend said on here once using a turd to polish a turd still leaves you with a turd! Trying to learn how to tattoo (not "tat") using a home made "machine" (not "gun") is like trying to learn how to do eye surgery with paperclips. Draw, draw, draw, take art classes and build up a portfolio. Then start visiting professional tattoo shops and work on getting an apprenticeship. Do it right...or don't do it all.....scratchers are losers.

Please just dont, you may think by using grapefruit to practice that you are not doing any harm. In fact you are not going to stop at grapefruit, eventually you will start tattooing anyone who is ignorant enough to let you. That will cause the spread of diseases. I got Hepatitis C from someone like you that THOUGHT they knew what they were doing, now I will probably not make it past 40. Do the world a favor and just don't.

Oh Christ...this is how kitchen scratchers are born....I really hope no one dignifies this with a real answer. (n/m someone already did... :::rolls eyes::: )
If you want to learn to tattoo, GET AN APPRENTICESHIP like the rest of us have. If you start off scratchin, you won't ever be fully respected in the tattoo community or taken serious as a real artist as you cheated and skipped learning all the important things that comes before putting a machine in your hand.
Oh yeah, word of advice, don't call them guns!!!

Are you planning on killing people with that "gun", cause tattoos are done with a "machine". How old are you anyway, 13? Did you even ask a question here?? Seems to me you were just informing us all that you were trying to make a "gun" and that you are practicing on a piece of fruit, that I might add cant bleed or yell "ouch" when you go to deep. Can you PLEASE tell us what city and town you live in so we all know where to avoid?

I have nothing more to add since all of the rational people have already answered intelligently. I just hope it maybe made you think and you'll stop what you are doing.

Please do not go there. You are asking for infection and disaster. Take a course in this art and learn what you obviously don't know but want to know.
