FCC regulations state that you must turn them off while in flight. Most airlines will say that cell phone use isn't allowed after door closing or before door opening to disembark. Although...some airlines will let you use them right after landing...just listen to the in flight announcements.

As for actual evidence of cell phones interfering with the electronic equipment and communication devices on the airplane...that actually hasn't been proven yet. But, to test and shield every single bit of equipment that could be affected by cell phone signals would cost millions and it's better to be safe than sorry...so all cell phones off.

And as for a personal experience...I have left a cell phone on by accident while riding on a plane...and i discovered it was still on midflight. Obviously we didn't crash...and there was absolutely no signal to it....but please....don't leave them on.

You cant use your cell phone in flight. Its the rule. You have to turn it off once the airplane door closes.

I've heard that cell phone use while in flight can screw up some plane equipment and stuff on the ground too. Dont know if its true or not, but i rather not take that chance.

The best thing is to turn it off.
However most people use it before the plane takes off. But when the plane is about to take off and land, the captain will inform that all cellphones and transmission gadgest to be turned off as it messes with the frequency and waves to and from the plane.
So. turn it off or put it in a flight mode if your phone has that feature.

You have to turn it off.

Straight from the Federal Communications Commission:

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules prohibit the use of cellular phones using the 800 MHz frequency and other wireless devices on airborne aircraft. This ban was put in place because of potential interference to wireless networks on the ground.

In March 2007, the FCC terminated a proceeding that it began in late 2004 to consider potentially lifting this ban. The FCC determined that the technical information provided by interested parties in response to the proposal was insufficient to determine whether in-flight use of wireless devices on aircraft could cause harmful interference to wireless networks on the ground. Therefore, it decided at this time to make no changes in the rules prohibiting in-flight use of such devices.

You can use it until they close the cabin door. After they close the door, the phone has to be turned off, not just silenced. You can turn it back on once they land the plane - it can be used while you are taxiing to the jetway. The flight attendant will make an announcement when you need to shut it off and can turn it back on. It interferes with the pilots instrumentation, so PLEASE don't leave it on!!

it's nearly impossible to get signal while in flight (yet somehow on 9/11 many people did). They tell you to turn them off after they close the cabin door.

2 motives are in many cases reported. One is available interference with the airplanes navigation electronics. the different is the way cellular telephones artwork. because of the fact the airplane flies very quickly the telephone could could desire to swap cellular towers very quickly, overloading the cellular telephone device.
