A few times, I've had cigarette ash on my leg from my friend sitting next to me when I'm in the pub, and if i'm sitting with this particular guy he always touches my leg and brushes it off, is this a sign of flirting or politeness?

Well, if he just brushes off the ashes and apologizes, then it's politeness. It's just rude to smoke near other people and have ashes fall over them. And the polite thing to do is to brush it off for them so they don't have to touch your cigarette ashes.

However, if he spends too much time massaging your leg while he brushes it, RED FLAG.

Um, if he brushes ash of your leg I wouldn't consider that as flirting. If there was no reason for him to brush your leg, but he did, then I would consider it flirty.

Yea, it was probably flirting. I would not touch a woman unless I thought it would be taken in the right way and to let her know I wanted to be close to her.

Tell your friend to watch where he's dropping his cigarette ash! That would really annoy me!

Not only flirting, but obviously hitting on you and using poor manners.

It's not polite to touch other people's legs.
