Pyotr b and Mig 31 have given correct answers. Mach No is a dimensionless RATIO between the speed at which a moving object is travelling - and the local speed of sound.
The local speed of sound varies depending on altitude / temperature. Therefore, Mach 1 is reached when the speed of an object is equal to the speed of sound in the region within which its travelling.

Mach number is a ratio and like all ratios it depends on the magnitude of the two quantities being compared. For getting the Mach number you need to divide the speed of your vehicle with the *local speed of sound*. If both are equal, you are going at Mach 1.
At 15º C, at sea level, Mach 1 is 340.3 m/s (1,225 km/h, 761.2 mph, or 661.7 kts)
At 40,000 feet, the standard atmosphere temperature is -56.5º, speed of sound is 295 m/s making Mach 1 equalling 1062 kmph, 573 knots or 663 mph.

Mach one is the speed of sound. What the speed of sound is depends upon your altitude and the temperature. The higher you are, the lower the speed of sound is, and the higher the temperature is, the faster you have to go to achieve Mach 1. At sea level and 15 degrees Celsius, Mach 1 is 761.2 miles per hour.

* Mach speed is dependent on altitude. At higher altitudes, in thinner air the speed of sound is slower. (above's answer)
* At sea level (zero altitude) Mach 1 = 761 MPH = 1225 km/hr
At 35000 ft , Mach 1 = 663 MPH = 1067 km/hr
* if you want to really dig into the dirts, mach speed also depends on air temperature and humidity, but affects only about 1-2 digit or a few decimals (less than 1 digit)
* There is a table of Mach speed vs. altitude and air temperature, about 1 to 3 pages, just match the variables/condition, and you get the actual Mach number

1 Mach is the speed of sound which means 100% of the speed of sound. 0.80mach which is the typical cruising speed of airliners means 80% the speed of sound.
Concorde could travel at 2 Mach meaning 200% the speed of sound. In the air sound travels at a speed of about 330 meters every second (740mph)

There was a demon that lived in the air. They said whoever challenged him would die. Their controls would freeze up, their planes would buffet wildly, and they would disintegrate. The demon lived at Mach 1 on the meter, seven hundred and fifty miles an hour, where the air could no longer move out of the way. He lived behind a barrier through which they said no man could ever pass. They called it the sound barrier.
