Changing my name after our wedding seems like kind of a pain in the butt, and I've seen quite a few bridal name change kits online. Are they worth it? Which one is the best one for its cost?

It was free and instant when I got married. Why pay for it? That is what your marriage license is for. All you have to do is a name change on any bills, creditors and the like. All that will cost you is time on internet or some ink!

I just got married and changed my name, and really those kits are not worth it. People make it seems like it's a project to change your name but its really not.

When you go to Social Security, take your SS Card, your birth Cert. and your marriage licenses. You fill out some paperwork and your done. They give you a paper saying that you changed your name and you keep that for reference.

When you go to DMV, Take your DL, and that Receipt that you got from SS. They will have you fill out the same form that you filled out the first time u got your DL, and they will Take you new pic, and your done.

For your credit Cards, and Billing most of that can be changed by Internet or calling Customer Service numbers.

No Big deal.. SS and DMV is the most important part and you can really get that done in a few hours. Take half a day from work and get that stuff done, and a pedicure!

Good luck!

The annoying part about changing your name is the first 2 parts. Sitting in line at the SSA building, and then sitting in line at the DMV. after that, calling up credit cards and insurance companies is just a phone call. most don't require a copy of the license. so really a form letter isn't that big a deal--plus if you forget something for a few months its not a big deal.

But an online kit seems like a scam. You'll still have to sit in line at SSA and DMV.

Don't buy a kit. All you have to do is take your new marriage license and get a new drivers license and social security card, both of those must be done in person. Then call your credit cards and utilities or whatever else and simply have them change your name over the phone. Weddings get so expensive because vendors are always finding new ways to trick brides and grooms into buying something they don't really need.

No need for it. Changing my name was easier that I ever expected & totally free.

Start at the social sercurity office, have 2 copies of your marriage certificate on hand because some offices require to retain a copy for a short time. You'll fill out a form & in about 1 1/2 I had a new card. The same day I went to the social sercurity office I went to the bank & changed my name on my account, as well as added my husband to my account. Everything else was as simple as a phone call. All utilties were changed, cell phone account, as was my credit cards. I recieved new cards within the week. When you get your social security card in, go to the DMV. This was the most annoying part because, well, it's the DMV & it's always annoying. I needed a copy of my marriage licence, as well as proof of where I lived (a utility bill, lease, or deed is perfectly fine, but call your local DMV just to be sure). Be sure to fill out any forms at work as well & remind them to change your health insurance info as well. That's the only thing that took time in my case, it took almost 2 months for work to finally alert insurance of my name change.

I considered getting the kit, but wanted to try it myself because, well, I'm cheap. It was easy & no one ever gave me a hassle. Doing it by mail & things isn't needed, a simple phone call does everything except for your social security card, DMV, & banking. I had everything done in an afternoon.

It is so simple to change your name it is not funny. Don't waste your money on a kit.

Take your marriage certificate OR a certified copy of the certificate to the Social Security office. Tell them you want to change your name because you just got married. They will give you some paperwork to fill out. Fill it out, and turn it in. (Took 10 minutes) 4-6 weeks later your new social security card shows up. Once your SS card is changed. Your name is changed.

Take the Marriage certificate (or Certified copy) to the DMV. (I waited until my new SSN card came in to do this.) Tell them you want to change your name because you just got married. There is some paper work, and then they print you out a new License. (took 30 minutes)

After that it is just a matter of calling your creditors/debtors and informing them of your name change. (took 2 hours to tell everyone, and 2 letters.) For the letters I had to write, they needed a hard copy to put in my file for legal purposes.

You still have to do a lot of the work you would do without them. You would be better off gathering the information by putting all the names and addresses in a database or contact list and then write a series of form letters (one for credit cards, one for friends, one for ... ) using a selection from the database. Then you would have all the addresses in a form that you can maintain and refer to in the future - like lost credit cards.

I didn't use one, for me it was just as easy to take my marriage license in and get my name changed at the places i needed to (i don't have credit cards so that made it easy to) plus it doesn't cost money to do that, why pay when you can do it yourself for free?

You can get most of the info you need off the net for free. Just do a general search for how to change your name. You are going to have to mail stuff in or go to the social secuirty office. I would just do it myself. I did.

No. For safety's sake, it's best that you handle all of the changes yourself. It's really no big deal, people do it all the time. Otherwise, I'd worry about identity theft or something.
