Atearoa - land of the long white cloud - is the Maori name for New Zealand. New Zealand has a mountain range running its full length and this sits astride the westerly winds. The air rising over the mountains produces cloud along the full length of the ranges which is seen from the plains. Mountain waves in the atmosphere also produce long cloud lines downwind of the ranges. The cloud is very much a part of the New Zealand experience.

The Maori name for New Zealand is Aotearoa. This translates as 'Land of the Long White Cloud'. Indeed if you are flying into N.Z and it is a cloudy day you can see the clouds stretching right across the country and it looks like a long white cloud - quite beautiful.

The previous answer is good though the spelling is incorrect! Aotearoa translates to "land of the long white cloud". It is due to the clouds formed over the Southern Alps, in the South Island, but I wouldn't say cloud is part of the New Zealand experience! It's a cold but sunny winter's day in Auckland today!

Aotearoa translates from Te reo Maori as "land of the Long White Colud". It is believed that the first Maori to settle in New Zealand named it Aotearoa by a chief, as there was most probably a long white cloud over New Zealand, as there mostly is nowadays.

Land of the Long white cloud is correct. Here's a link to the online New Zealand Encyclopedia that she can look at to help familiarise herself to things here. We're not that different.

Still have shopping Malls, Gas Stations etc. Brand names will be unfamiliar. Good luck to her. It's a long way to travel, but we are in general a friendly bunch.

Advise her to steer clear of Palmerston North city in the North Island. It's the Land of the Long Black Cloud. I kid you not.
