Fences make good neighbors, its been said for thousands of years. Its human nature for people not to like each other just like religion. These two combined has twisted history round and round, and therefore has lead to better and better weapons. The money for the military is needed where it is because as long as the guy on the other side of the fence is screaming how I need to die because I don't worship HIS god or even how I should worship, I'll keep my fence up and my gun loaded.

Help the Human Race is a TALL order - Even Yeshua told us that there would be poor always (yup its in the Book). So, lets spend the billions on our own homeland first.
That aside, the military as envisioned by the Founders of this country was for the common DEFENSE - not offense.
Our military should be on our soil except the Navy which should be a 7 ocean force to protect our citizens overseas.
Between a good Space Command and Navy, there is little reason for our soldiers to be anywhere overseas.

It's not large enough. Fighting terrorism around the world is a full-time job and we're the only nation with the muscle and high technology to do the job.
Spending money on "the human race" is low on the list of Constitutionally mandated responsibilities of our government. Defense is at the top of the list.

The military budget probably has items in it that are not required but, unfortunately, the overall money for the military appears to be necessary. However, as you do, I think that it would be wonderful if those hundreds of billions could be spent on education, health, etc. Maybe some day ....

Unfortunately, everybody does not always agree on exactly what "helping the human race" means.
Hard core socialists believe that eliminating free enterprise is beneficial. Hard core fundamentalists believe that creating theocracies based on their religion is beneficial. Supporters of democracy believe that the right to vote for your leaders is beneficial. Etc...
The function of the large military budget is there to keep the groups who have a very different idea of what is beneficial from forcing it on your particular country.
In short, I'm quite happy to have a strong military to protect my right to free speech, free commerce, freedom of religion, etc... In fact, I believe that protection of those rights *IS* beneficial to the human race.

Well, where we are right now, the money is really necessary.
My hubby is a supply Sgt - and their budget was drastically cut. Unable to get what they need due to the flow of money needed for the people in Iraq.
No matter what happens, we will always need a military.
This is America - you are to either work really hard and make it yourself - or not. It's all on each person to follow the dream.

In 2006 the United States spent over half a trillion dollars on military spending. That's more than the rest of the world combined.
At the same time we ranked outside the top 20 nations in charitable contributions as a percentage of gross domestic product. We gave just over $12 billion to charity in 2006. That's less than the cost overruns on a single military project like the F22 fighter.
The US has the resources to end starvation on the planet without increasing taxes a penny, but we spend it on war instead.
This is because our leaders and media keep us in a constant state of fear. Remember, there really weren't any weapons of mass destruction, it was a lie.
Would you like to live in a nation that's the salvation of the world, or the greatest killing machine in history?

Of course everyone would rather beat all our swords into plow shares, but that has never happened yet in history, and it is doubtful it ever will. You always have to worry about the other guys' swords, you know. That's not to say that maybe we have a few more swords than we really need, and maybe some of them could be beat into plowshares.
