There are a number of sub-varieties of red onions, some are darker red than others, some almost look purple. They all taste like onions, even the ones that look almost pink.
Confused? Eat an onion, they are good for you.

They are mostly purple-ish. The fresher ones are a bit redder. But yeah, I never understood why they say they're red onions.

there is a purplish color in your crayons called Red Violet. I guess they were thinking of this color when they called them red onions.
