To me, it means that there is more to life than one's physical needs. We have spiritual, intellectual, and emotional needs as well, and simply feeding the body doesn't take care of those.

Whether you believe that those needs are, or can be, met by God is another matter; I believe that spiritual needs are a part of life, but I don't believe that concentrating on ANY one aspect is healthy. If you over-feed the body, you become obese; if you over-feed the spiritual side of the self, then I think you lose touch with the real world. In short, I believe that a healthy balance is essential to a full life.

You have to keep your physical body alive with food (bread) but we also have a spiritual life and need Jesus and the Holy Spirit to be healthy. So you cannot live by bread alone.

Jesus said that Man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God....There is food that sustains the body and there is spiritual food that sustains the soul and spirit.

It's open to interpretation in thousands of different ways.
I have a gluten-free diet so I cannot live by bread at all.

Hey Ray: I've tried to go one second without god, so apparently my soul will die in eternity. Thanks for your very thoughtful answer - it makes it pointless to try to find god. I can now go about my agnostic life with the knowledge that god does not want me. I wish I could thank the person who gave you a thumbs up as well, but sadly I don't know who it was.

There are a lot of good answers here. Several are the "right" answer. Of course, it's important to place this passage in the proper context. And, many answerers have. Christ wanted us to know that although we need food to nourish our bodies - for which I am very grateful - we also need the Word of God in our lives to nourish our souls - for which I am not only grateful but often times amazed, confounded, perplexed, confused, awestruck.....
You can change the context if you like, as many do in order to remove Christ Jesus from the equation and make it fit thier lifestyle, but it is what it is. They are the words of Jesus as passed to us from the Bible.

When Jesus said that he was speaking in the common mans words. The word for bread then was also manna. The scripture meaning for manna is: Divine Spiritual nourishment. In other words Jesus was saying we need not only bread , but we also need manna.

it asks you to question: which is more important; your body or you soul? your body (usually when eased into it) can go over a month (I have not seen more than 44 days) on just water, no food. the soul however will die in eternity trying to go one second without God.....

You need more than material things and food for your body.

You need something to feed your soul/spirit.

That's true for everyone no matter what you believe or don't believe.
