He is marking his territory...use woolite if it is just a spray cause it doesn't really penetirate...but to stop him you must show him what a where it is, YOU must stick his nose in it, growl and put him outside for about ten minutes...he will get that you, the alpha in the house doesn't like it...and he willstop...it is natural, but you must let him know that you don't like it....hey only when i really don't like something and want it to stop immediately do I growl..it really works and its my secret weapon.

One thing that will help is having him neutered. This decreases the testosterone in the system and makes him a less territorial - therefor less likey to mark (which is what he's doing). Another thing is that he could be going through a behavior change in his growth - this happens with dogs just like it happens with kids. If you have access to a behaviorist, they could probably help with this. There are other tricks too - like tying a bandanna around his middle to kind of secure his penis - it would be like a little reminder every time he goes to lift his leg -- perfectly harmless. I've seen this done with a Chihuahua before.

Please do not use the can with the pennies in it -- this can cause psychological trauma to a dog (especially at 6 months) and can create a fearful animal.

Like most people had said, he is marking his territory & yes, it is natural & yes, it can be stoped :) How ? By swatting him or rubbing his nose in it & saying NO, NO & putting him outside as soon as he does it, let him stay outside for awhile if it's not cold out. Getting him neutered, will NOT do any good if he has been doing it for a while. But it is good to get that done too. I have two males, both good in the house. I also have two fixed females. It takes house braking to stop him from lifting his leg, and a lot of no's. When your not home, keep your pup in a dog carrier. Make sure you tell him good-boy when he go's outside & does something ( pee or poop ), even give him a treat just for going outside..
Good-luck

Male puppies are known to do that. The are supposed to lift their leg and pee on trees and so when the see a coffee table leg or chair leg or even a couch they do the same thing. All i can say is you might want to take your puppy out every hour of half hour to prevent that. When your puppy does that, do not yell at him because he doesn't know any better. Another idea is to go to a store such as Canadian Tire and buy a "bear bell" and hang it on your door down low where he can reach it. Then, everytime you take him out slap his little paw on the bell. After a while he will learn to go to the door and hit the bell himself and tell you he has to go outside. I did it for about a month or 2 when my dog was a baby and now every time she needs to go out she runs and rings it. It is possible and shows how smart they are. TRY IT!!!:)

If he is not fixed get him fixed. If it still continues work on his potty training more. There are some dogs who will do this even with being fixed and trained. You then can try a belly band ,or it is sometimes called a male sanitary garment, And that will prevent the urine from getting on your furniture and such. Also a lot of male dogs that do not respond to training will respond to this. It is a cloth band that goes around their midsection and covers ther pen*s their is a slot in it to insert a pad.

He has reached sexual maturity so he's marking his territory. Now it's started it will be hard to stop. Pretty much impossible if you don;t neuter right away. Even then it will take time.

One of my boys reached maturity just before 5 months. He was neutered at 5 monthsweeks. It took a couple of weeks, but because I was persistent and thoroughly cleaned where he marked it stopped.

Neuter right away is your best option.

He is starting to mature into an adult male. It's normal for adult male dogs to hike their legs to "mark" their territory.

You need to deligently start house training him. Any time you can not be right with him, he needs to be in a dog crate. When you take him out of the crate immediately take him out to potty. Only feed him twice a day so you can regulate his bathroom habits.

Clean all things he has soiled with a product made especially for cleaning animal urine to remove all traces of it.

Thats normal! Males lift their leg to pee and females squat to pee. Why would that bother you? Are you saying he pees in the house or he just lifts his leg to pee? If he is going potty inside you need to housebreak your pup. If he is going potty outside thats normal. If he is not going potty inside and hes lifting his leg to pee outside, please dont get on to him for that, thats just what male dogs do. I am pretty sure if you get him neutered he will stop lifting his leg.

He is becoming aware of his special purpose and is marking his territory. Now would be a good time to take little Sparky and pay a little visit to the vet before be tries to "know" your slipper in the Biblical fashion.

Normally they will stop after you have them fixed, but if the problem persists you may want to purchase a small kennel to put him in. Dogs do not like to sleep where they pee.
